Well the minimum recomended ftlbs of energy for a elk round is 1500Ftlbs, the 243 has over 1600ftlbs at 100 yards, so by the standard it does qualify for a 100-150 yard elk round. Like I said before...

Well look at it like this. Alot of people handgun hunt with a 44 mag, using them on deer, elk, bear, and Moose. A 243 with a 100gr. bullet has more energy at 200 yards than a 44 mag with a 240gr....
