I would get the .50 cal., more to choose from as far as bullets/sabots go. You can load smaller bullets and get sabots to fit, I would also recommend loose powder over pellets, not only cheaper but...

This past Dec. I shot at a nice 8 pt. using a 345gr. PB over 85 grns. T7. The deer was inside 100 yds., when I shot the deer took off like someone had lit it's tail on fire, about three minutes later...

Have never tried to cut one down but hodgdon said that you can mix powder with pellets as long a the pellet goes in first. I have tried it with one pellet and 30 grns. Pyro and it works for a range...
