The camera manufacturer will have the FAQ on their websites, along with a .pdf version of the operation settings manual. Look for time lapse frequency and image delay settings.

Keep the sun (shrinks gasket), rain and snow off the camera body, especially entry-level cameras, moisture wreaks havoc on the electronics. Try covering the camera to shed water away from the front...

Vote raccoon damage, those dudes will eat the batteries out of your cameras if they can get to them, one of most (next to rats and squirrels) destructive animals in the forest.
