Squirrel hunting near Peoria, IL?

My son wants to go squirrel hunting with me, and since the family property is two hours away, I'm looking for some public land closer to home. Anybody have experience near Peoria, Illinois? He's only...

First time hog hunt: Which rifle should I take?

I've never been hog hunting before but am going out later this month to an area where the hogs are said to *average* 300lbs. That seems a little big to me so I'm wondering which rifle I ought to take...

I'm a newbie, don't have money for the new stuff, and would be highly interested in the old ways even if I could afford the new. I'd love to see a thread devoted to old-time hunting methods,...

I have heard (don't know if it's true) that quartering or cutting up a carcass before rigor mortis has passed can lead to tough meat.

Anecdotally, I have little experience with butchering animals,...

Why do deer follow this route?

The farm where I hunt has a manmade pond, maybe a third of an acre, hidden in the woods but closely bordered on two sides by agricultural fields. The pond was made in a three-sided natural valley,...

Thanks for the comments guys. Good idea about polishing up that front sight - that really made a lot more difference than I thought would. I've been taking practice "shots" every chance I get (from...

Thanks very much SecondChance, I appreciate your help. To answer your questions:

1.) The gun is an old Sears & Roebuck, made by Savage, 12-gauge with a factory-rifled barrel. It was made in the...

My front bead is about as big around as a thickish trombone-style metal paperclip. Any smaller and I don't think I'd be able to see it reliably. But I might be able to replace it with a blade instead...

I hunt alone, so there's no pressure to deal with other than my own need to fill the freezer. I also don't have funds for any more equipment, so what I've got will have to do. It was good enough last...
