Generally, I have my scopes set at the lowest setting which is either 2.5 or 3X when I'm hunting here in PA where most of my shots are under 75 yds. This will give you the most field of view should the deer be moving through the woods. If a shot presents itself a lot further out, If I don't have the time to increase the magnification, I'll just put the crosshairs where I want and squeeze the trigger.
