I wouldn't say Leupold or Nikon is the best, but they are up near the top, I love the Leupolds. What power scope do you want and on what gun will you place it on?

if your in the 3-9x40 range and can swing another $100 look into the Leupold VX-2, if the $200 is your limit, look into the Bushnell Trophy XLT, Nikon Prostaff, the Leupold Rifleman

Here is some other thoughts on scopes. Redfield scopes are made by Leupold in Oregon. Its a fairly inexpensive line of scopes, but I havent used one yet. In all honesty, if this is your primary hunting rifle, I would encourage you to up your budget, or hold out longer so you can. IMO, its better to budget glass(scopes) closer to what you spent on the weapon. Granted, $200 is better then the $50 tascos and simmons, but I'd at least try to add another hundred to that, and get much better glass. With glass, you get what you pay for, up to a point.

Check out the Elite series too. I like them. No problems on the heavy magnums, clean crisp image and bright.

You can't go wrong with Leupold or Nikon typically, and the new Redfields are actually pretty nice for the money now that Leupold owns them. I'd also look at Sightron, they make great scopes for the money as well equally as good as those 3, imo. Agree that you get what you pay for also, but if you are really tight on spending, you should be able to get a very capable (and nice) scope for $200. Certainly a huge step up from the typical less than $100 scopes. There is no comparison.

The Burris FFII is better than the majority of the other scopes mentioned here. IMO it's the way to go until you step up the Zeiss Conquest.

A lot of the scopes mentioned above a good scopes especially the sightron. Now,I have the redfield revolution on my Omega and love that scope. Holds true and very clear quality lenses. I rank it better than the prostaff and comparable to the Leupold 2. I paid several months ago at Dicks 159.00 but now there around 200.00. I have the 4-plex. The reviews on this scope are excellent. You wont go wrong and the warranty is there to back you.
