scope on a h&r 20ga.?
Im tring to put togeather a light and easy to shoot gun for my 12 yr olds first deer season. I have an old h&r 20ga (topper mod 58) smooth bore shot gun from when I was a 15 yr old, that is still in very good shape and no rust. would it be worth the effort and $ to have it drilled and tapped and put a good scope on it so he could shoot a slug more accuratly out past 50 yards. if so does any one know how much it should cost to have that done also to have the trigger lightend up a bit.

I don't think it is worth it, but thats just me. If you can there are a few god shotguns out there worth buying for your situation. Look into the Mossberg 500 combo, somes with 2 barrles, one is a field barrel with a few chokes and the other is a rifled/cantilever scope rail mount, put a decent scope on it and he has a shotgun for various hunting situations, good money spent to last a very long time

At the local gun store, I can find used slug guns reasonable after shotgun season.
I'd opt for somthing that is going to last him rather than a smoothbore that will probably throw 6" groups at 50yds.
If you look around you can find a 20GA H&R w/ a slug barrel and scope mounts for around $150 or so used and in good shape.
