For all of you who own the new .300 WSM. Is this caliber as good as all the stories I have read about it so far. The articles I've read really make this caliber sound great.

It is a good cartridge RE: accuracy, and performance levels between a .30/06 and a regular .300 Win. Mag. But, if you own EITHER of these two, there is really no point in getting one, other than the fact the new round is available in short-action rifles of the same size and weight as the M70 Featherweight in .308 Win. caliber.

Eldeguello, I have an old Fabrique Nationale .270 with a Belgium action and a .30-06 Browning automatic. I've just got that itch you get every now and then to buy a new rifle. Thanks for the reply.

I've got a .300 WSM M70 stainless and I really like it. It's noticably more handly than a comparable .300 win mag or .30-06 and gives better velocity than the .30-06. I'm not that impressed by velocity so I feel that anything the .300 win mag will do the .300 WSM will also, but in a handier package. If something needs killing more than the .300 WSM will do then I've got the .375 H&H for that.

It is a very good cartridge. I have used one and the ballistics are about equal to that of the 300 Win Mag. However I already have the standard 300 win mag and I would not trade it for the short mag if I had to pay any difference. You should get less recoil from the short mag as it does shoot a smaller powder charge. If you were however to buy one for that reason alone, I think you would be disappointed. The biggest advantage to me would be the shorter action lenght. If I was younger I might buy one.

Boltman or James B ,I was told the recoil is less than a 300 win mag what is your opinion on this . My brother wants one because thats what he was told by a dealer . Most of the time I find what this guy says you can't believe . Just curious .

In my opinion, the recoil is less than a .300 win mag. I really can't tell the difference between it and most 30-06's I've shot. But then again, stock design has a lot to do with it. I've shot .300 win mag's that kicked less than .270's with bad stocks. The .300 WSM's recoil is nothing to be scared of in my opinion.
