I tryed the 350s and my Marlin 1895 just won't group them as well as the Nosler 300 gr par. with 47 gr IMR 4198 this gives me 2000 fps and 1 3/4 " groups at 100 yd . Last year I took a texas heart shot deer at 150 yds and got full length penatration ,broke the jaw on exiting .

i shoot Hornady 300 gr HP in front of 51 gr of H-4198 out of my 1895 GG and they shoot great. Took a 260 lb blk. bear 2 yrs ago with this load and it literally rolled him after smashing the front shoulder

My new pet load is a 300gr barnes original fp and 48gr of imr-4198 in a federal case. I chronographed this at 2090fps. I'm taking this load with me to ontario on a wolf/bear combo hunt in sept. You guys would call me a liar if I told you how accurate it is in my 1895ss.

Have you tried the barnes o on deer sized game? I have used the Rem 300 jhp they blow up and I tried the Win 300 gr partition and they just poke holes. I am trying for the middle of the road.

My pet load for the .45/70 is Elmer Keith's pet load for the M1886 Winchester in this caliber, 53 grains of IMR 3031 and a 400-405 grain bullet, either cast or jacketed. I consider IMR 3031 and Alliant RE 7 to be the best two powders for the .45/70 (unless one wishes to use black powder!!).
