Hello Otis
I am not familiar with the 280 but I looked at it in a reloading manual and it should be ok
to reform them . Before you you do you may want to anneal the necks. To anneal them
head the neck up with a propane torch and then plunk them into a can of water this will
make them soft and then they wont crack when you run them through the resizer. You
also want to have your bench bolted down good if they are anything like going from
30-06 to 25-06.

Otis, the 3006 is about .050" shorter than the 280 case, and the shoulder isnt going to be in the right place either. You will need to fire form them to get the shoulder moved up, so you wont save anything by using 3006 cases reformed.

A friend of mine does it all the time. It's not a problem. The shoulder of the 280 being .05 further up than the '06 is a good thing. You form a second shoulder and headspce snug on that. When you fire it the shoulder blows forward to fill the chamber. You get brass that fits your chamber better this way.It being shorter is no big deal. Like my friend says "I'll never have to trim them".

true enough fire forming cases is no big deal, but if you want full power loads you need to fire form the cases and then work up your load. Shoot the same load across a chronograph some time one in a 3006 case, and one in a formed case, and see what the difference is. You will be surprised how much energy is used up forming that case. For the extra cost of bullet and powder, you might as well just buy the brass.
