Bullet seating depth

Just a note. Slim's advice given above will only work with that particular bullet. Different bullets have different ogive designs so OAL will differ also.

bronko, i do this for all my rifles. i use hornday bullets for all my guns. i do this in case some friend asks me to load something different for their rifle. this way my die can be set back to the right length for my gun. also i have rifles to hunt diffferent critters. 243 for varments, 06 for deer. i also use the dummy round to set the seating die. i start with the bullet being a little long and keep adjusting down until i get the depth i want. this was taught to me by a long time reloader.

As far as I know a cartridge loaded a little shorter than the ideal length will always be better than one loaded too long.

If the bullet needs to be seated more than.020" it would be wise to reduce powder charge by t0% and ladder test.

something else you might want to check is the case length after resizing. your cases might need trimmed back a little. your book should give the trim length before seating the bullet. both trim length and bullet seating too long could cause the problem you are having.
