I am trying to build a load for my 30-06 Sprg. using a 165 gr. Hornady IB for my Mule Deer hunt. Do any of you folks have any experences using H414, H4350 or, IMR-4350 using a 165 gr. bullet? Thanks in advance.

you lucky stiff....going mule deer hunting..... and my favorite cartridge....the .30-06.
Assuming you can get your hands on Hornady' s 165 IB I' d be tempted to use H-4350

It will be interesting to see if with the IMR/Hodgdon merge they retain both H4350 and IMR4350.the same number will be confusing and with the extreme line I would look for some of the same number/same basic burn rate powders to be merged.

I think Hodgdon is a good company. They well may leave things just as they are and not change anything. I can see though a benifit for them of combining many of the powders as with some there is such a little difference anyway.

Handloader1........My " do all" 30-06 load consist of W-W brass. a CCI-200 primer, 165 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip over 56.5 grains of H-414. It shoots consistant 1" groups or under and averages 2820 fps out of a 22" barrel. I learned to like the H-414 powder due to being a ball powder that meters very well and gives decent velocities.

handloader,
Of the powders you mention, I use H-4350. Since Hodgdon reduced the grain size it meters very nicely. The primary reason I like Hodgdon extruded powders is the extreme technology. The powder is very consistant from one lot to another and is insensitive to temperature changes. I get the same velocities at 100 degrees as I do at 13 degrees. The result of this is I also keep the same zero of my rifle. I wish I could figure out how to post a picture, I' d attach a copy of a ' 06 five shot group. With the 165 grain Sierra HPBT, CCI BR2 primers, Winchester cases and 59.5 grains of H=4350 the group measured .247" c/c. Velocity is 2830 fps.The extreme velocity spread of 10 shots was 11.0 fps. Standard deviation was only 5.1 fps. These results are excellent. Right now I' m playing with the Hornady Interbond bullet. The velocity spread is very close to identical. Good luck.

I am going to use Hodgdon 4350 Extream because of the reasons you use it. I also considered velocity, burn rate, accuracy information form various loading books and manuals, availability (could not find H414), along with Vapodog' s opinion. I think the load will work out very well; I am going to pick up a Lb. tomorrow at The Outdoorsman. I do have a question; how long is your barrel? Good luck.

Yes, the Outdoorsman in Santa Fe. I loaded last night, but I still have to get to the range. How far did you set your bullet from the rifling? Good luck.
