Default Not happy with 270wsm

I purchased a 270wsm 3 years ago, thinking this would be a good caliber ( beings I hunted 20+ years with a 270win with good success ) I reload all of my own bullets and with the old 270win I had it dialed down to about 1/2" Three shot group at 100yds. but what I like best was that this 130 grain siarra bt had the knock down power ( on Minnesota whitetails )from 50yds to 300yds it would leave a great exit hole and drop them in their tracks, I reloaded that 130 siarra to travel at 3100 fps..
Now this 270wsm is another story, I don't use the 130 sierra in this gun because I was told that I need to use a premium bullet and the sierra would break up on close shots because of the higher velocity. so I tried the 130 grain ballistic tips ( they sucked ) they were very accurate but when hitting a whitetail in the front shoulder at 75 yrds it fragmented, didnt even exit. Last year I aquired a box of Barnes xlc 270 130grn bullets loaded them the same as I did the ballistic tips. shot another average deer at between 75 and 100 yards. ( Had to shoot it twice behind front shoulder ) bullet holes same size coming out as they did going in.
Im reloading to achevie around 3200fps. what bullet can I use that wont blow up ( like the ballistic tips ?)Orlike the barnes XLC( and not expand at all )??????
There has got to be a bullet out there that works at 50Yds as well as 300YDs and at a higher velocity ( 3200 + fps ). Please help "" Steve

Try some 140's I've gotten excellent accuracy from the 140 gr Accubonds and SST's. You don't need 3200 fps to take a deer.

Stevie - I am wondering who the 'expert' was that told you you needed premium bullets for the 270 WSM. That was inaccurate advice. I'd try the 130 gr Sierras out of your rifle and see how they shoot.
Please don't discount the Nosler BT on one deer. I've use them exclusively in my 270 and have dropped countless deer with them form point blank to way out there. From what I've 'heard' the earlier BTs had a thinner jacket than the ones now. Don't know if that is true.
I use the Accubond in my 325 and they are plenty accurate. But then again, you getting into the premium bullet again.

Nosler BTs suck, they are going to fragment out of the 270 and 270WSM as you have witnessed. Go back to your Sierra's or give the Nosler Partition a try.The Partitionis one of the best, if not the best,Hunting bullet available today. Or if you like the accuracy of the Nosler BT, switch over to the Nosler Accubond. Same great accuracy as the BT without the explosive fragmentation.

Hey Steve, Go here and check out this ballistic chart. I shows the expansion of different bullets at various velocities. As the chart shows the Nosler BT blew it nuts all the way from 3100fps down to 1400fps. Pretty much a POS as a hunting bullets goes.

I've pushed the 130 gr BTs with 55 gr of IMR4350 and have taken deer from 10 yds to over 400 yds. And out of dozens of deer, only one required a second finishing shot. Most dropped where they stood. For deer, I never was one for a shoulder shot. I preferred to shoot just behind it, lower 1/3 body. This usually liquifies the lungs and sometimes the heart. Devastating.

Compared to most std cup an drawn bullets like the game king, power point, corelokt, and inter-lock the billistic tips are designed to expand at a faster rate due to the effects of the tip. This was a classic mistake in choosing the wrong bullet design for the task at hand (close shot from a higher velocity cartridge). If that shot was at 200-400 yards you would have loved the b-tips perfaomance.

For the 270wsm try the 140gr partition or the 140gr accubond if shots mainly at longer ranges where the pointier accubond would be an advantage. Or for shots under 200 yards any of the none tipped hunting bullets of 150grs for that matter.

A bonded bullet would hold together better. I have been using Hornady SST's though and have no complaints. Always a good exit hole. The hydroshock I have seen with these will break a deers spine when halfway up or better in the vitals.

I have to agree with bronco, i have shot bt for many years out of 25 and 30-06, 7mm mag and 300mag. all have performed flawlessly. I cant ever remember one not passing threw. shots have been from 10 yards to367 yards. granted i always try to shoot threw the lungs, but sometimes i have hit the shoulder. The longest shot i have ever made on a deer was with my 7 mag shooting 150gr bt,the deer was facing me and this is a shot that i dont like to take, but i knew the deer was not going to give me anything better. I had a bipod rest and no wind that day. The bullet entered midway into the chest and exited out the right back leg. Now if thats not pentration i dont know what is. Last year i loaded up some 165gr accubonds for my 300 mag,I shot a buck at 50 yards with it. Small entrance wound and small exit wound as well, making me think maybe it was to strongly constructed for deer, but i realize a person can not judge a bullet from only 1 animal. The deer only ran 40 yards before giving up the ghost, but i just thought it should have expanded more at such close range. Dont judge your bt one just a few deer, they are a fantastic bullet
