The a-bolt I shot recoiled more than I thought it would probably due to the fact that it is quite light compared to the rifles I normally shoot. It felt noticeably harsher than a 700bdl in 7mm that I shot at the same range session.

Seattle...having never fired a 270 WBY I can't say how it compares with that..it is probably more harsh than a 7 Rem Mag even in a heavier rifle . The Model 70(300wsm) is a little better than the A bolt in the recoil handling dept but there is not a real quantifiable difference. It's a different kind of recoil though accompanied by I think more muzzle blast because they are loaded to higher pressure. Now for those that don't think it kicks less than a 300 win mag ...go and shoot a 700 AWR which is the same weight as the A bolt in 300 win mag or 300 wby mag and tell me there isn't a big recoil difference.

Dg-Actually the 7mm rem mag adds about 200fps to 30-06 velocities with the same weight bullets. The 7mm bullets of the same weight will also have a higher ballistic co-efficient so they will not lose velocity as quickly as the 30-06 bullets. As far as recoil if you shoot the 270wby mag and 7mm rem mag in the identical rifles with the same weight bullet you probably won't even be able to tell any difference in recoil since they both use an almost identical case capacity and only vary by .007" in bore diameter. The only fair way to compare recoil is in fact to use identical guns as the weight of the gun, balance and stock design all have a great effect on felt recoil.

The .270 Wby Mag generates approximately 200-250fps more velocity than the 7mm Rem Mag with equal bullet weights. Since the SD of the .277 caliber bullet must be greater than that of equal weight bullets in .284 caliber, we can easily surmise that the .270 Wby Mag is a superior performer by every measure.

For over 14 years, I've seen firsthand what the .270 Wby Mag can do. It is awesome. <img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle>

Having said that, the new .270 WSM is nearly the equal of the Weatherby cartridge, and all this in a shorter length. If you like a rifle chambered for this cartridge, buy it!

Seattlesetters-Actually the 7mm weatherby mag produces about 100 to 150 fps more than the 7mm rem mag with equal bullets. The 270 wby mag obviously throws the same weight bullets slower than the 7mm wby mag.If you load the 7mm rem mag and 270wby mag to the same pressures(with the same barrel length) the 270's advantage will be at most 100fps and usually less.

Stubbs - I stand corrected. But I would still take the greater SD of the .277 bullet launched 100fps faster out of a .270 Wby Mag over the 7mm Rem Mag. On game, though, I'm sure there will be absolutely no difference between the two, and the ammo for the 7mm Rem Mag will be a heck of a lot cheaper!

I purchased a Browning .280 last year and absolutely love it. It shoots pretty much as flat as the .270 but delivers that extra punch to knock game down.(I would be comfortable with a 300 yard shot) I have not had a hard time finding ammo but you would want to go with the Federal premium loads as I have found them to be the most consistent(except for handloading). The only other option I would even consider would be the .25-06 as it is another flat shooting gun, actually flatter but doesn't quite deliver the knock down power of the .280. I hope you enjoy whatever gun you decide to go with.

Since I don't see a 7mm-08 Rem on the list, I would go with a 280 Rem.
