Im looking for a good load for my new .300 WSM model 70 featherweight
I like 165 ballistic tips. anybody worked a load up witht hese bullets yet??

Nope haven't touched the 165 grain loads. Nosler #5 should have the loads in there and if I remember I have a lot of load data on this cartridge and will reply to this tomorrow. I have been messing around with the 180 partitions...65.0 grains of H4350-Federal 215 primer set at 2.860 OAL and I get 2940-2960 in a 23" barrelled A bolt

Ok 65.5 Of H4350 with a 165 partition will get you about 3100 fps..same OAL as my previous post along with same brass and primer

I have been getting 3290+ with 150 grain winchester silvertip ammo . On your gun back off that load number and work up to it watching for pressure signs and you should be fine. I have had very good success using Hogdon H4350. Because I was loading for an A bolt the OAL was 2.860 for your Winchester you can seat them out they like about .020 off the lands with partitions.

Have not shot the 165 partition yet..person that shot it said .75 he is using a 300 wsm winchester SS that has been modified...trigger done and freefloated...I have been getting .75 with factory ballistic tip ammo and less than 1/2(believe it or not) one ragged hole with 65.0 H4350 ...180 grain partition ..Fed 215 primer and OAL set to 2.860. This happened again yesterday and I chronographed the load this time at 2925-2950 . This is a browning A bolt Stainless Stalker that with exception of a trigger job is untouched and has had about 150 rounds fired thru it.

Might the .300 WSM be light-recoiling enough to let me get into a larger magnum caliber without doing further damage to my already-tender shoulder?

Remember, I can handle the kick of either the 7mm Rem Mag or the .270 Wby Mag, which I find to be about equal. How does the recoil of the .300 WSM compare to these two?

Seattle--with your shoulder I would stick to the 270 wsm...if you look up Winchesters website and based solely on factory ammo . Compare a 130 ballistic tip with a 140 ballistic tip out of a 7 stw and look at the 400 yard drop. Now the long mags published velocities are taken with a 26" barrel and the short mags with a 24" barrel. Then tell me what you would rather carry around with you. Your talking a gun that weighs 2 lbs less is very accurate and extremely flat shooting and is manageable for you recoil wise. I am basing it on the fact that a 270 win mag is a gentle recoiling rifle and the powder capacity on the 270 wsm is not that much greater and the case is more efficient. I am waiting for Ruger to come out with one of these.
