I took my new 300WSM to the range this weekend to work on groups now that Ive had trigger worked on. 1" at 100 with factory winchester 180gr power points. The gun is model 70 feather weight with decelalator recoil pad it has some kick to it shooting off the bench. I plan to try the 180 and 165 gr ballistic tip and partition loads this week end Ill let you know how they do.

DG--I have had the model 70 for a year and 1/2 and the Abolt since last fall...I have nothing but praise for them with exception of the actions , they are both accurate and not finnicky about loads, one require more work than the other(mod70) to shoot well but it is doing very well now the A-bolt out of the box is the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. I find that I don't like the action on either one much ...A bolt is not as smooth as I thought it would be and likewise for the Model 70(SS). Handloading my 700 classic in 300 win mag..the action is smoother much smoother and the shells seem to feed better...velocity wise I am using Max loads from the Nosler # 4 manual and it the 300 win mag is about 100 fps light in that department...using handloads in the 300 wsm I am getting 2925-2960 with 65.0 H4350 and FED215 primer which is below the published velocities in the Nosler manual. The Classic is a nice pointing rifle and the abolt and the m70 are also. I prefer a long action and a bit heavier gun though so I am thinking down the road I would like to get a carbon steel Model 70 action or a likewise 700 short action and get it rebarreled with a 24" barrel and fit into a mcmillan stock to get at 7 1/2 lb range, the reason for carbon steel over 416 is I believe it is slicker.If i change my mind I will go with a factory ruger 77. So far all the factory ammo I have used has been right at specs and even exceeded in some cases with both rifles and one has a 23 and the other 24 inch barrel, worst accuracy has been with the powerpoints(180) . Felt recoil is less than experienced with the classic but it has comparable if not more muzzle blast. Your right about the Hoopla the dealers around here cannot keep them in stock either of the calibers and the 2 custom gun builders I talked to are swamped and building lots of them. The ammo and brass is very easy to find.

Oldelkhunter what type groups were you getting wtih the power points and what groups were you getting with the H4350 with 180s and 165s??I didnt run my shots through my chrono yet. I picked you more 165 aballistic tips abd some 180 partitions but shop didnt have any H4350 so have towork those loads when it comes in what about trying with IMR 4350??

3dnwv I was getting about 1" groups from the powerpoints which I used exclusively for the first 2-3 boxes of ammo shot from the abolt during breakin. Handloads were less than an 1/2 " One ragged hole with the 180 partitions...I have like I said before ever shot 165's out of that gun. I have a friend in Alabama that pretty much specializes on building SWAT rifles and as a matter of fact does them for a certain city in Alabama. He pretty much uses Remington actions Krieger,Schneider or Hart barrels are used per him. He built 2 Remington custom rifles in 300 wsm for 2 local hunters. He told me they would shoot small ragged groups with them and were ecstatic about the performance.

Does this mean if I am looking to buy a Ruger 77 Mark II......I should make the .300 wsm my first rifle?

Any .300 Mag is a lot of gun for a first rifle. Perhaps a standard caliber with less recoil would be a little easier to learn with.

IMHO, a .280 Rem would make a far better choice as a first deer rifle. You can also hunt just about everything else in North America (except brown bears and bison) with a .280, and it will do the job just fine.

The weather was good today so got to try my 165 ballistic tip load out did grea1st 2 shots nice tight figure 8 3rd steped out ended up about 5/8 inch group. the load was 64.gr H4350 fed 215 primer 165 BT win brass 2.86 OAL thanks again elk hunter.
