Factory Winchester .22-250 neck cases splitting
#1
I noticed that out of a box of 20 of .22-250 Winchester 55gr cartridges that about 7-8 cases where split at the neck. I only shot a box out of 5 boxes I bought so far. I bought these rounds back in 1998.
Are these REAL hot loads of winchesters or just cheap brass? Could it somehow be my Remington 700 BDL causing this?
Has anyone else ran into this situation as well?
Thanks.

I would measure the diameter of the expanded neck of one of the fired cases that didn't split. Compare that to the neck diameter of a loaded factory round from the same box. The difference should run at least .005 and not more than about .008. It it is bigger than, say .010, the neck of the chamber is cut too big - and the necks are swelling too much. If not, it is probably a brittle batch of brass. Has this gun been shot much in the past with factory ammunition? Do the loads show obvious pressure signs - like cratered primers, extractor mark, or hard bolt lift?

I need to did out the 100 rounds Remington Brass from the factory loads I shot several years ago and see if there is neck splitting on them.
I do not notice cratered primers, extractor marks, and there is nohard bolt lift.
Probably just brittle batch of Brass like you say.

With brass produced in the mass way that it is,to find defective brass or shells will happen. Somtimes some get by quality control. But for the most part,as the amount of ammo these companies put out, they do pretty good. vangunsmith
