The more I hear about this raod up to Kisk..., the more I think I need to prepare!! If it is as bad as everyone says it is, it makes you wonder how so many make it. Our plan is to spend the night at K381 (already booked our night in hotel) and then leave at like 3am in the morning to hopefully arrive at kisk close to dark. I would rather travel as much of that road in the daylight as I can.
From what I understand, you say the hunting along this road is very good. Where do you pull off to park a vehicle if the road is that narrow and bad? I've heard the lower part of the Tiaga road has pull off areas every so many miles or so & you must be in these areas to park.

Someone mentioned a while back that they thought the charge to bring a rifle across the border dropped from $50.00 to $25.00. Can anyone confirm that?

I just answered my own question looking it up on the canadian customs website...

A confirmed Non-Resident Firearm Declaration costs $25. This fee covers all the firearms listed on the declaration.

- As Homer Simpson would say.. Duh-oh...

Is anyone else going to try taking a bow this year? I still plan to make an attempt at a bou with my bow before I break out the rifle. I don't care if it is a cow, I just want a bou with my bow!!!

The road is not too bad and it really depends on he weather - Kisk has been taking care of it since they have some traffic now, but take it slow. The fish cops will be all over you below the dam if you stop in the road and don't use a pull off - we had a guys get a 100$ fine for pissing in the road in 2004 - they have let off some but they patrol the Taiga and Laforge road and will nail you - if you see animals on these roads inside the zone, drop off you buddy and stay behind the wheel to a pull off -if the driver is out of the car they could slap you with a fine.

Above the dam the pull off rules do not apply and I have not seen a fish cop on this road at all - and that is why we like hunting that piece.

The guns are cheaper - depending on how you look atit used to be 50$ for 12 months and now it is25$ for 60 days. I would have hadmy guns covered from last years 50$ with the old tax, not I am paying another 25$. You can get all your apps on line and fill them out ahead of time. Last year the border cop made us take out our guns to match the SN - he gave us crap about the bolts in - so if you them pull them out forthe trip - is actually CAN law.

We also stay at the K381 garden spot - we leave at 1:00am and hit Mirage at about 9:00am and get some hunting in on that day - weather on our side. Kisk is another 160 clicks past mirage and will take another 2 hours, maybe 1.75 hrs - so you could also get some hunting in if you leave early enough. You have to get you licence at Kisk and it is too bad you can get is at any outfitter.

Get some video of the dam and spill way your and the folks at home will not believe the site of LA1 - massive and this is a small dam compared to some of the others.

I Forgot to mention on the bow - I brought on the first couple of year as I love to bow hunt. I leave it home now as I would have never gotton a shot. It the animals are in mass I think I will try again this year - so if you have room, I would bring it seeing how the migration is. Bring a light grain/fast arrow with good range at 70 yards+. Pulling is hard here, and even on your sled the snow is deep and they can go a ways hit with a broadhead - thevitals areforward in the cavity so hit tight to topof the front leg just behind the shoulder - qtr away I would look for.

Yes this is correct - you can use trigger locks and it is the law in Canada.

"Attach a secure locking device, such as a trigger lock or cable lock (or remove the bolt) so the firearms cannot be fired"

So if you do not have a bolt action you need to use a trigger lock or disassemble the weapon.

Speaking of the road to Kisk and beyond. The first time up there we hunted out of Donat's (what a rat hole). The migration was late and the only hunting was by chopper. We drove from camp to the end of the road above LA 1 which is 100 miles and 3 plus hours. The first day there was a guide from Nouchmi taking hunters by snowmobile accross the reservoire and over the ridge about two more lakes returning in about 40 minutes with two caribou. We asked if there were a lot of animals out there. His reply was yes, thousands. When will they be here we asked. Very clam and matter of fact he replied daylight tomorrow. We returned to camp, a little skeptical, another 100 miles, and prepared to do the same in the morning leaving camp at 4:00 am. When we reached the end of the road it was just getting light and you could see across the entire res. Spread across that frozen mass there were no less than10,000 animals in sight. If somone would have described that to me the day before I would have told them that they were full of caribou ****. I was hooked. The following year we got into Mirage and have been going back every year. My hunting partner is hunting out of Caniapisceau right now and is going back with me to Mirage Nov. 30. This is his second year doing the double hunt. I'm going to do it next year. Hooked on caribou meat isn't a bad thing. Last year was the toughest of thetimes I've been up there. I guess I shouldn't complain about one bad year out of seven. We leave home two months from tomorrow. Hopefully the migration will be more favorable to us this year. Good luck to all.
