Default How are the deer doing?

Has anyone seen what condition the deer are in near Georgian Bay? There' s been a lot of snow and cold temperatures. Are they moving around or still yarded for the winter?

I answered the question myself when I went up to Wiarton today. There' s 2-3' of snow in the open and drifts of 6+ feet. There are no signs of deer movement. They' re still holed up in their winter yards. I hope the weather turns around quickly.

Have been on the road this week in southern sask (where the wind blows drifts 10 feet high in places), the deer are yarded up but appeared to be in great shape here. 2-3' snow cap is on the fileds, but since they are yarded up and its blowing lots of food is available. Up north when travelling they are doing about the same, ditchs and meadows have exposed grass, as well wind on fields has made for fairly easy pickings. Good thing for the fluffy snow and cold weather, so they haven' t experienced many hard packs, that come with warm then cold weather.

Deer have just been dropping the horns in mass as of late, this is good news as it points to very limited stress being placed on the herd.

I say they doing just fine here, if you care

skeeter; it' s nice to hear how things are going across the country. Unfortunately; our snow is hard pack from freezing rain.

Here in Thunder Bay the snow has only been ankle deep all winter. Maybe 18 inches total snowfall all year. Very cold though, even by our standards. The deer tracks are all over the place and they seem to be doing very well. Hopefully we' ll have lots for the fall.

Same here in eastern ontario, lots of trails and tracks. Seen plenty of deer while driving the back roads in the middle of the day. The one' s I' ve seen looked real healthy too.

The front page of the Wiarton paper shows that the deer are out from their yards and looking for food. Now if the weather only stays warm things don' t look all that bad.
