Default Manitoba Draw license

I'm on holidays this week and lost count of what day it was. Luckily, when I checked the mail, I got my ML survey form from conservation which reminded me that Thurs was the last day to put in for the draw. I made it to conservation with an hour to spare. Hopefully I'll get drawn again for Archery Elk. Any of you Manitobans on this forum put in for a draw licence this year?

Put in for area 21/25. Was fortunate a couple of years back and harvested a nice spiker just north of Broad Valley. The thing is the elk in this area are always on the move (I suppose move lots where ever they are)so lots of calling and moving around.Only saw one group of 2 guys archery hunting for elk in this area the last time I was drawn.

I haven't taken a moose in archery yet, I've left that to my .338 mag. It is something though, whether it is elk or moose to come face to face with an animal in the wild that is so much bigger than you. The spiker that I harvested was done at 15 yards. Right after the arrow left the trigger (it couldn't have been past the bow) there was an incredible bugal that came from behind me. I smoked the spiker perfectly so I knew he was going to go down. I watched him for about 30 yards till I lost him in the trees (seemed like forever but was most likely just a couple of seconds) and then I looked over my left shoulder to see a huge 5x5 maybe 30 yards behind me. The wind was from my left so somehow I had gotten between the 2 of them. The big brute had just watched the whole thing. After I spotted him he watched me for a few seconds more and then just turned and walked casually back further into the bush. The spiker had gone only about 10 yards from where I lost sight of him. All together one hell of an experience. I was ML hunting in Chatfield in 2002 behind a ground blind. There was a huge crashing and thrashing in front of me coming closer and closer real fast. I shouldered the ML figuring a big buck was going to pop out of the bush. Instead of a buck a big bull moose come out 20 yards in front of me. He had to have hadat least a 50 inch spread. I would have loved to have had an archery ticket but I could only watch. I think he must have been pissed at something for he just stood there snorting and thrashing. I really thought he was going to put the head down and have at me. He continued on his way though passing me by no more than 10 yards. It took about 2 days for my heart to stop pounding. Have you ever harvested a moose during archery? It's one thing I would like to try someday but be absolutely honest it does seem scary. Let me know.

I have shot 3 with my bow the last one is probably the most memorable right now we followed him acoss a field and caught up to him in some willows he had been making a wallow in there which made for a shooting lane he never responded to our calling he would come to 60-70 yards then trot off but when we got into his domain he got pissed off he had just gone behind some willow out of our sight and i heard him grunt for the first time i grunted back and drew back my bow he came charging through the willow and luckly stopped at 18' or i think we would have been pounded into the dirt he was almost facing straight at me so i shot him between the brisket at shoulder the arrow sunk up to the fletchings he wheeled out of there and went maybe 50 yards we watched him tip over pretty exciting.
My first ever elk i shot at 7' as he came by we called him in as well.

Nice story, way cool. Your heart must have been near pounding out of your chest. As I said someday. Another question??? Are you using cut on contact broadheads? I need to pick up some more broadheads this year as well as another dozen arrows (if you ask my wife she would explain it more as a want...oh well). I was just going to pick up Muzzy MX-4 100 gr. or should I go for a cut on contact type like the Phanton series (may be both?)? I've been using the carbon arrows for whitetails the last few years but when I harvested the elk it was with an Easton aluminum. What's the set up that you use? (I have a draw wt. of 70lbs.)

Maybe I'll just buy some of both. I have bought the Cabela's 3 blade and they have worked fairly well. Maybe it's just the brand name but I'm thinking of going to the 3 blade Muzzy. I also think I might pick up the cut on contact Thunder head if I get drawn for Elk. I like the cut on contact idea for the tougher hide.
