Exclamation Adding Scope to 11-87 Sportsman 12 GA

Hey all!

I was lucky to have received a new Remington 11-87 Sportsman 12 GA for Christmas.

I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to gun modifications so I've got some questions. I'd like to mount a scope on it for hunting deer, but am confused on what it would entail. Here is a link to my gun http://www.remington.com/products/fi...man-field.aspx

I have the vent rib barrel shown in the picture. Do I need to purchase a separate deer scope mount barrel to install a scope? Or can I just purchase the shotgun scope mount sold by Remington an attach it to my current setup?

Here is a link to the scope mount http://www.remington.com/products/ac...pe-mounts.aspx

Any information about what I need to purchase is appreciated. Thanks!

Congrats on your new SG! As far as now turning it into a scoped deer killer, there's a few things you can look to do. You could purchase another barrel (rifled) to use exclusively for shooting slugs, which is the easiest way to go. Many of these barrels come with a cantilever mount (extends from barrel back over the receiver). By doing this, you will not need to remove the saddle mount, I believe you were referring to (seen below) when wanting to shoot small game.

The scope and saddle mount or the cantilever barrel would both work well for turkey, however. If the cost of a new barrel plus the scope is too much, then I would suggest buying the saddle mount, a decent scope and also, perhaps, a rifled tube for your original barrel. I owned a M1100 and it was quite accurate using a rifled tube, giving excellent performance to 100 yards.

Short of buying an additional rifled tube, I'd choose to try the IC tube that came(?) with your SG. A couple of decent scopes (not knowing your $$ range) would be a Weaver V3 1-3x20 (about $160) and a Leupold VX1 SG 1-4x20 (about $200), both of which I've owned and been very happy with. Of course, the sky's the limit with $$ and optics.

You'll just need to compare costs and determine which type system would be best for you. Generally speaking the best accuracy will be seen with a fully rifled barrel & scope, followed by a rifled tube & scope and then last, an IC smooth barrel & scope. Good Luck!

Buy the rifle/cantilever barrel, they are expensive but do it right.......A field barrel is for shot not slugs, and that saddle mount is useless
