10x should be good for sitting and glassing. Are you looking at the Monarch 3, 5, or 7?

A lot of people complain that 10x is a little too much for handheld observation because the smaller field of view contributes to "wobbly" picture when your arms start to feel heavy. At several hundred yards, you'll probably be happier with an 8x if they're going to spend the hunt hanging around your neck.
If you do decide to go with a 10x, consider a lightweight tripod and adapter. You'll be able to glass a little farther and you can get a really detailed look around you if the shakiness of handheld binos starts getting to you.
The Nikon Monarch is good, and it should do well. I've been very impressed with the Bresser Everest - not well known in the US yet but they come in both 8x42 and 10x42, and are comparable with the Monarch with a slightly wider field of view.

The Monarch 3 is a bargin, and the 5 is not much more and a bargin at it's price. Either will do the job. I think you will be happy with the Monarch binoculars.
You mentioned having to hold the glasses very close to get the full field of view. Did you extend the eye cups when you were looking through them?
I like an 8x pair when I am hiking around elk country, but a 10x pair is better in wide open country if you are sitting and glassing.

Birdwatchers are serious about their binoculars. Here is a good review of the Nikon line:
