RE: Zeiss Conquest, 40mm or 50mm?

The average human eye pupil only expands to about 5mm. So to keep clear sight thru a scope or binos in low light you have to have a 5mm exit pupil. That's how big the image is thru scope at proper eye relief. So with a 40mm scope, all you have to do is make sure it's turned down a tad so that it's under 8x or so to ensure maximum brightness for that scope. A 50mm isn't a bit brighter until you go above 8x.

In lowlight I would go at least with the 50mm but rather 56mm forserious hunting inlow to nolight at all.

Little late on this, but I think a 56mm would make some hunter's outlaws....especially on a field in the am with a moon or bright sky, or in the evening. lol I wish I could afford a scope with a 56mm objective, if it were for just looking at what I hear coming in after 'dark' lol

I don't have a 40mm but I do have 2 4.5x14-50mm and they work really well at first and last light.

You seem to forget that in most places,it's HIGHLY illegal to hunt in the dark-especially for deer and other game animals.

True, but there are cloudy days, dark woods, creek bottoms, west side of fields with tall trees, etc....where light beats you before the clock does.

I have never hunted where a 40mm conquest was not adequate during legal hours.

Ive got a 44mm and get beat out on one stand in particular whether it's cloudy or not, just because it's in a hole....rarely does the clock tell me it's over before the light does, but it has happened, on a particularly cloudy, dark, ominous day...not by much, but sometimes all it takes is a minute or two more of being able to see through the scope to have sucess or none.

then again, I dont have a conquest.....but the major difference I see is at longer ranges....against dark edges.
