With a $200 limit, take a look at a Bushnell Elite 3200, Leupold VX-Ior Burris Fullfield. These are about in that price range and are from reputable companies. I have a Fullfield on a ML. It is pretty decent. The difference in these and ones running 2Xas much is that at about $450 - $500 you start into some good low light performance and a much crisper image.

Ok, thanks for those suggestions. I'll get one of those as soon as I can, if I find I really need a scope on my 30-30. Which I may not, but I'm not sure.

I have a 3 x 9 on my Marlin 30-30. And if I had to do it over again, I'd put the same thing on it. 3 x 9's are the bread and butter of most scope manufacturers, so there are a lot to choose from with a price to fit everyones budget.

Leupy's are good but cost / value may be over rated.
get a leupold m-8 fixed 4x. you can find them all day long used in great condition for like 100$--150$

Well, I won't be able to get one right away, but I'll be willing to pay $200 for a good scope. So... yeah. That's my limit for a 30-30, price wise.
I have hunted with a 30 -30 and I would never go less than a 3-9x40. Too many times I have wanted to be able to turn the scope up to look a buck over to determine its age and / or size ( body and rack ). If you get a 3-9, you dont have to turn it up to 9x, but you can if you want. If you get one that is only 5 or 7x, you cant turn it up if you wanted to. With leverevolution ammo, you can take deer out to 250 yards. Everyone has their own opinion and likes and dislikes, but when folks say that you shouldn't do this or that, it means that they wouldn't. But if you like it, there is nothing wrong with that... Like I said, I would go with a 3-9 minimum .... and would consider a 4-12x.

As far as brands go, I would consider a Nikon or Burris....in that price range.

There are several good quality scopes to be had for about 200.00, but these are the ones I would choose from.

Hope this helps...

God Bless

What would you recommend for a 30-30? I mean... what brand is a good one, and what power for a 30-30?
I have a Zeiss Conquest 3-9 on one, a Leupold VariX II 3-9 on another, a Leupold VX II 2-7 on my sons, and a Leupold VX III 2.5-8 on my daughters Spikehorn (for when she is old enough to hunt).

Poor ol' Retrieverman ... stuck with that tiny, under powered 30/30 ! I wonder how much meat the 30/30Win. cartridge puts on the table every winter? I bet it would be a staggering amount.

And I mustcompliment the R-man ... that was some kind of shooting to get that hog to drop right on that one rock !

your probably right but i use bolt actions for longer shots. if you hunt brush and generally shoot less than 100yard shots i couldnt put a 3x9 on a 30-30. it ends up looking kinda goofy and bigger than the gun itself to me. its also nice to be able to point and shoot without worrying about turning the scope up and down. if im judging game i always go to the bino-s. but have been guilty of using the scope once in a while.[:-]

To each his own. I don't think my 336SS with the Conquest looks too "goofy", and the scope is definitely not bigger than the gun.

I do agree that there are much better calibers for longer shots, but I only have a Leupold VX III 1.5-5 illuminated reticle on my Blaser R-93 Professional Tracker in 308.
