nice job would it be worth me doing this on my prop we have 200acers but have full hunting right and acesse to over 1500 acers i was thinking foodplats and minerallicks during the spring and summer what do yall think
? and what limits should we put out?
deersniper That is an awesome amount to put in to it. Hopefully one day my area will have that many acres in it. When I started we had 75 acres in it 2 years ago. Each year it slowly grows. You will probably encounter some negative people on the way. But dont let that discourage you because they will see why its worth while in a few years.

Did you see any MT. Lions or bigfoot on your trail cams. We harvest 85% of our 2.5 + buck in Pa. so how did all those bucks survive on only 400 acres? DIdn't those guys shoot any buck last year?

Would you mind sharing what county you are hunting and how many DPSM you have on your property ? How many acres do you manage, how many guys hunt it and what is the goal OWDD for your WMU?

Geez DD! Cant you just leave one thread alone once in awhile without trying to turn it into a rehash of your criticism of Pa's management of the deer herd? This thread is about Bullmoose's beginning success with managing their own corner of Pa. Let it stay that way.

Disrupting yet another non confrontational, postive, freindly thread seems to be the point.

Glad to hear someone in PA still has great hunting and a reason to look for sheds. I haven't seen a deer on our property since Jan. even though we started timbering. haven't seen a buck since the first week of Nov. I saw 3 or 4 sets of tracks , but you could walk your legs down to your kness and not find a shed around here.

ddear I am in Schuylkill county. We had about 400 acres last year. We lost about 100 acres it was sold. I didnt meet the new owner yet. Hopefully he will continue the program on that property. There were about 13 guys that hunted the property but I would say 6 of us put the majority of the time into it. The funny thing is there are people next to our land saying there are no deer. But when you show them the pics they still want to deny the fact that there are deer here. I got video footage of 3 buck together last summer that would all score over 120. I dont know the exact numbers you are asking for. We keep our own data from our observations. Last year we were seeing 5 doe to 1 buck. In 2003 we were seeing 7 doe to 1 buck. Our goal is to get it around 3-1 ratio.

Don't feel too bad...its not just a PA thing. It's been the same way here in my area of NY for the past couple of years. Everyone was complaining this past season that there were no deer around and the DEC is trying to kill off all the deer. Now that the snow is melting off and the fields are becoming exposed again...everyone's talking about all the deer that they've been seeing everywhere! Figure that one out? I think that people are just used to seeing the overpopulation that has been present here for too many years. Hmmm...makes ya wonder....if there's no deer in NY...then where did I manage to get all of those big bucks on video over the past couple of summers? I guess that I'll just have to keep it a secret. Good luck on all of your QDM endeavors.

Congrats on your early QDM success Bullmoose!

You don't have to worry about the B/D ratio, since before AR the statewide ratio was 1;2.1. With AR and HR your area probably has an adult breeding B/D ratio of under 1:2.

Now here are a few facts for you to think about. If your land is in 4 C the goal OWDD for that area is 12 DPSM and in 2003 the PGC said 4 C had 26 DPSM , so the herd has to be reduced by 14 DPSM. With 12 OW DPSM, you can expect to harvest 2 adult buck PSM ,so you'll be able to harvest 1 buck/yr. off your 300 acres.

Oh look, a dead horse!

Whack!

Whack!

Whack!

I think we all understand;)

Bullmoose, once again congrads on your success, but it is impossible to have a buck to doe ratio of 1:7, Its very hard to have a buck to doe ratio of over 1:3.

Deersniper, good luck with your qdm!! as far as food plots go, just do as much as you can, 1 acre of year round food plot will feed about 3.5 deer per year.

BT. other than quality nutrition, the mineral content of the soil in the area deersniper's property is located, is far more important than genetics, our herd in PA. has just as good of genetics as your property in IL. Pike
