Ok, please define "deep woods" as you see it.
Truly deep woods is relatively rare anywhere in Pa. I think the point though is that there are a lot of hunters who don't put much effort into their hunt any more. The results of the PGC survey where guys carried a GPS and knew they were being tracked were pitifully embarassing. Those guys barely left sight of the road!!

I know that when I hunt rifle season on public ground in the ANF I'm going to have to go deep, steep or ugly to have a successful hunt. My experience (only talking about mine here) has been that very few hunters are willing to do that and they (the ones who wont go where it's deep steep or ugly) are the ones that I hear complaining the loudest about no deer.

I like it that way, I know when I am in the "steep and ugly" and see another hunter he is A true hunter.

I have to laugh about this one. "Deep Woods". How many times have you heard a hunting story inwhich the guy says he either "hiked" back into the woods about 1-2 miles or how he had to drag the deer about a mile? Has anyone ever walked a mile? A mile is ALOT farther than you realize. It's not like driving a car. Even after scouting, stalking or whatever doing in the woods on a hunting trip, you'ld be very surprised at how much you had walked but yet so short of distance.
Except for NC PA, if you walk in 2 miles, you will walk into hunters from the other direction, or cross a road. How about another old theory?
not true, up the road on our good old, well managed game lands, we can walk for 2 miles without coming to a road. by the way we live in NW PA

I think controlling the deer herd is up to us "The Hunters" now. IMHO it's all about the money for the PGC,,,so give em their friggin money & buy as many tags as you can possibly buy, and then just dont fill them. The area that i hunt in clinton co. has been so overkilled it's pathetic. In as little as 5 yrs ago i could set in my treestand and see 30-50 deer per day,,,granted i never saw a so-called trophy buck but it was nice to see deer,, it was nice to see does with fawns,,and it was a good feeling when you shot a doe in hopes you were doing the herd some good by taking the doe. This year i sat from 6:30 am until 5:15 pm everyday of the opening week and i seen 15 deer. maybe i should feel lucky...some didnt even see that, but of those 15 deer i did see none of them were yearling fawns,, 4 were nonlegal bucks,,,2 of which wre 3.5 yr old spikes (educated guess on the age) and who knows how many times i counted the other 11 deer twice in 6 days. to me ,if you dont have fawns you dont have deer, period! I may be wrong in doing so,,,but im gonna buy tags and leave them in the gun cabinet and tell my great grandchildren one day that i spent alot of money making sure they would have a deer to shoot at.

If you duy a tag, that is a tag that another hunter can not use, that tag saves 1 maby 3 deer if not used, if it was about money they would of raised the fees for the tags, like they did for all other license.

Hey rem, not saying your a liar or anything, but 30-50 deer a day? If I saw that many deer in one day, I'd give up my job and become photographer for Field and Stream. How many of those deer might be the same deer just milling around and coming back to their "yard" or "staging" area?

I've been hunting archery here( NW Pa) for 10 years and haven't seen that many deer in a week.:D
