Sure Ulysses, I think I did post that to Tinpa2 earlier this week in another thread. They absolutely could, and HAVE put out preliminary reports before. And it has nothing to do with check stations.
It has everything to do with what you first pointed out, this year it would not cast their mediocre program in a good light. So they have holed up and no ones talkin'.
