What do all these lines mean?

What do all these lines mean?
I am really just getting the hang of reading topo maps. I can understand the contour lines quite well, it's just all the dotted and dashed lines I get confused with.
For instance, one of the red lines on my map, if I can describe it.........long line then 2 dots....so on and so on....what's that indicate?
I am assuming two short dashed lines runnng parralel to each other indicate some type of road.
Any help will truely be appreciated. I have looked on the USGS website, and they have some symbols, but the text is so darn small I can't make it out.
