Seen 11 different deer today. No shooter bucks. I already used my doe tag for 2D during archery. There was a lot of shooting around us but the deer didn't really move until the afternoon.
My brother hunted in 2B and only saw one deer and that was when he was leaving the woods.

no luck today. Did not even see a tail. Saw turkeys twice and a red fox.

When I came down to the truck I was the last one so I did not get to ask how anyone else did.

Back again tomorrow.

RE: Pa hunters- any luck today??

I didn't see a single deer until 12.30 and she was running full bore...Saw 2 more doe about an hour later followed by a little spike, and then finally was able to get a shot off at 2:35 at a doe, she was running with another doe . I saw a total of 6 deer and I had to move to see them, with the exception of the last 2. I was holding off my criticism of the Deer Management changes for the first couple years, but now I have made up my mind on it. I don't think that the killing of all the does is working, I don't think the AR are working alll that well either. I hunt in Elk County and I was seeing and getting larger bucks 3 and 4 years ago 8 point and 9 point now all I'm seeing is spikes and last year I saw a forkhorn and a couple spikes. I used to see at least 20 or more deer first day and way back when I first started hunting as a kid it wasn't rare to see herds of 20 -30 deer at a time and about 90 first day. I admit there were rarely any bucks in those groups, but we saw deer. I think alot of people are happy just being able to see deer even if they don't get one. My doe hunting days may be over for awhile I'm gonna buy a tag and not use it. Maybe I can save about 3 deer a year that way and send a message to Pa Game Commission. Something has to be done with the doe kills.

I did get the doe I shot at by the way, but I'm feeling guilty about it, like I shouldn't have taken her.

got a huge doe from bout 30 yds around 9:30. another guy beside us got one too. i heard probably heard bout 100 plus shots, though i doubt any of those got one. i think the main problem is that most people wont get off the main trails. u actually have to get off the rods to see deer. sorry to burst some of ur bubbles.

Hunted Public Ground. Everyone in our group saw deer. Two very nice bucks came by my buddy and his 12 year old. They both missed. My 12 year old got his first, a doe. My 15 year old hit one in that no mans land in the shoulder and we gave it a bit of time only to blood trail to a gut pile. saw some sub-legal bucks.
We were 3 for 6 with does and all of us got a shot.

We did get 3/4 mile off the road.;) We didn't see another hunter except when we trailed the one back towards civilization.

Plenty of deer where we were!

we hunted in 2D near the Armstrong/Indiana border but it could have been anywhere we hunt including the ANF. We always take the time to get way back in on the first day and never have trouble finding deer. Don't mean to imply that its the case everywhere but we always do OK and generally hear the "no deer here" whine when we come out from the "thats too far to drag a deer" crowd.
The drags are getting tougher every year though;)

RE: Pa hunters- any luck today??

I posted this on another thread so I'll just paste it here:

Our camp got the standard two bucks. I saw 3 doe early Monday and took a nap in my stand around 10:30. My eyes snapped open a little before 11:00 and 30 seconds later I heard a shot from my dad's area. I looked up and saw a buck moving between me and him about 120 yards away. He needed to clear some trees before I could get a shot, but never made it because my dad dropped him. He was a good 8 with an 18 inch spread and my dad's best buck so I'm very happy for him. He'll be going up on the wall. Another guy in our camp missed a big 9 point that another hunter got up the hill from me. I may have had a shot, but I was looking the wrong direction. Another guy in our camp got a smaller 8 early Tuesday morning. We didn't see as many deer this year as we normally do, but they started timbering our hillside last week and the farm field on top was cut in September. There are definitely bigger bucks around and we are starting to reap the rewards of Dr. Alt's plan.

That was Somerset County BTW. Tuesday I heard more shots than on Monday.

Hey Buddy! Do you think it might be due to a lack of deer in our areas rather than a lack of skills????
1.6 million deer in PA. You should be able to find some deer. I'm not cracking on anyone's abilities, but the deer are out there we just need to go find them.

RE: Pa hunters- any luck today??

There were four of us hunting at our property the first two days and between all of us we saw between 50 - 60 deer and about ten of them were buck including a few small shooters. There was on doe taken and one doe missed. We have yet to see the big shooters we saw in archery season but they are holed up somewhere. I believe that has been the problem, the deer have had no reason to move and unless you flush them out you won't see them. Well good luck to the rest of you.

I don't think people are saying there are no deer out there, but I think people who have been hunting a long time in Pa. see the deer heard getting smaller and smaller. I think it concerns some of us to see the words of the Game Commission saying they want to kill off alot of doe.

How do we know there are 1.6 million deer in Pa's woods. The estimates are from the Commission right? What about there estimating proceedures? How do they know how many deer are shot and not recovered? How many deer are killed by hunters who don't mail in their harvest cards? How many deer are killed by coyotes and bears and cars? How many don't survive the winter? All guess work.... And if they guess wrong we as hunters should hold them accountable. ASnd I don't think the car insurance industry should be involved in any deer population discussions. We pay our premiums and if we hit a deer with a car then they pay the bills... That's how it is supposed to work.. Not slant the odds in the insurance companies favor. And I see that happening too.

RE: Pa hunters- any luck today??

I agree that we have to rely on the PGC for the numbers, but knowing how they estimate those numbers through deer density, radio tracking, herd dispersal, breeding predictions and monitoring, and good old-fashioned counting I feel the estimates are pretty accurate. I've been hunting here for the last 20 years and the herd is bigger now than its ever been. We still see tons of deer spotlighting, many more than 10 years ago, and see plenty of deer hunting. There are many hunters that may not see deer in the same spots they had in the past, but that doesn't mean deer aren't in the woods. Patterns are changing and we need to change with them to be effective hunters.

Well I just got back from our camp tonight in Bradford County, and was able to shoot a doe this morning. Other then that I saw no deer on Monday whatsever, and then yesterday I saw 8 doe and 2 bucks, one was definitly a shooter and the other one I couldn't get a good look at. It might have been a six point or a 4 point, I just saw it from the side. Other then that my brother was the only other person at Camp and he shot a doe on Tuesday morning and a 65 pound male coyote on Tuesday night that came passed his stand on the same trail as mother and two yearlings were on about 10 minutes earlier. Will be back up Saturday lookin for a buck.

I am a NY hunter. This year I was invited to hunt the PA opener in beach lake at a friend house. I had 27 doe and a fork come by my stand. I shot a coyote at 3:30 pm. It was a bad shot with a very faint blood trail. The coyote was chasing one of the doe and I shot him on the move. I tracked him for a while and could not find him before dark. One of the guy's hunting with out crew didn't see any deer at all. He was about a 1/4 mile away from me. He was complaining that the are no deer around. Two different hunters on the same land with two different perspectives. You just have to be at the right time and place your luck can change. I have had plenty of off day's in the woods. That's why it's called hunting. Sooner or later every dog has it's day.;)

I honostly believe that over the years the deer have adapted due to human encounter and have gone mostly nocturnal. I think they bed down in the thickest roughest stuff they can find during daylight hours and move only when "forced" to move.

Worst season in 50 years at camp. We hunt in WMU 3C and had 17 guys in camp. On Monday no bucks were taken and only 6 does. However, some of the guys were only going to shoot a buck on the 1st day so they let some does pass. Second day no bucks either althought a big 8pt was missed and 1 doe taken. Wed. rained like heell and wind was a blowin glad I had to be back at work on Wed so I didn't have to make a choice about going out. LOL

The number of deer sightings are WAY down and the re seems to be a lot of small spike & Y bucks along with does from last year with thier 1st fawns.

It seems as though the Ars are working in some parts of the state and not others. Its odd how some say its been the best season in years while others the worst.

I don't think it's so odd. By now we know the deer are not distributed evenly in this state. Most of the reports of huge racks and numerous doe sightings are in the western part of the state. Those guys (and gals) don't understand what it's like back east and are quick to ridicule us as lousy hunters. What's wrong is the PGC has adopted a "one size fits all" approach to doe tags. For every hunter on this board who is bragging, I'd wager there's ten who are crying.

I have historically made either of those statements interchangeably in any given year. A successful hunter will say it was a good year while a skunked one will complain. It is called hunter success rates. We didn't have a scapegoat till now.

Hunted northern Lycoming County ...first time I can remember hunting first day and a half of buck season without seeing a deer ...plenty of sign, just no deer ...the kill is way down in our area and the buzz is few deer are being seen

Kinda funny though ...my dad called last night and said he had four bucks (1 six and 3 eights) in the backyard ...and another buddy of his had ...are you ready... 11 bucks standing at a feeder behind his place during shooting hours on Weds. ...talked w/ other hunters ...most saw only a few or none ...one did see 27 the first day

Don't know quite what to make of it as of yet ...just know I was bummed out at the end of the second day

Hopefully I'll back on track next week in NJ shotgun season ...enjoy

Not much at out camp either in 3B. 6 guys hunting and only 1 doe taken. Didn't hear many shots. I had a shot at a doe but it was a judgement call as it was behind some small brush. I elected not to take the shot after contemplating it for about 15 minutes :(. We had a lot of deer at the feeder as soon as hunting hours ended, go figure. Just seems like one of those years. It's amazing how mysterious these animals are; that's what makes them fun to hunt!

We are having a good season. Monday was slow for good buck sightings, we have been passing smaller bucks for years long before AR. My brother shot a nice 8 Pt with 8" G2's with a 16.5" Spread. Tuesday was a different story. The buck were up and moving and rutting heavily. My uncle and cousin both shot nice 8 Pt's. I had a very intersting day after seeing about 30 deer, and passing a 5 and 6 point, I had a BIG buck come in some heavy brush, he was with some doe and snort weasing (this is the first time I've heard this in the wild, very cool!), I was waiting for him to take a few steps to clear some heavy brush when another nice buck approached. Needless to say the BIG boy took off and chased the other buck off, never saw the BIG boy again. About an hour later a nice 18" nine pointer with 10" g2's came in on the same trail as the last buck grunting, he took the necessay route and I popped him (I am in the middle).

If you all are seriously not seeing deer, you need to thank all the land owners that are posting their land "No Hunting". You get a large group of guys hunting a parcel, the deer get pushed to adjoining land that is posted... a safe haven for the deer.

Oh, and there are some bad hunters in PA. On my way home from N.C. in southwest PA, I saw 9, yes 9 hunters standing allong the interstate watching a single field.. I also saw at least 4 deer laying dead in the middle of open fields like somebody shot the deer and didn't recover it. Believe me folks, there are some slobs out there. To deny that fact is plain old ignorance.

Hey cardeer, come on down and help us out. Most of us filled one of our doe tags in archery and we are waiting for the bucks to come along. We will fill that second doe tag in due time if the the shot presents itself. My brother was out Tues. evening and killed a nice doe. He said there were deer everywhere on our property that evening including a couple young buck. We will keep you guys posted. By the way we are hunting in 4A.
