RE: Hunting the adirondacks,NY,Placid,saranac lake?
Somebody mentioned Lewis County, NY. That's where I live...I have a small farm...about 115 acres. I have about 70 acres of woods out of that.
As someone said, it gets very cold up here and it lasts a long time. These last 2 weeks, it has hardly gotten above 10 degrees for the daily high. Many mornings lately, I have headed off to work in temperatures of 25-33 degrees below zero. That snow gets deep too. Just to the south of us, there is 6 feet of snow on the ground. Fortunately, we have been spared in my area....but I have experienced those snow depths. Some of you wrote of hunting in the Adirondacks....my advice to you is....be prepared. It is not for the faint of heart. It is mountainous terrain and winter comes early. You must be in good physical shape...I run 3 miles a day...a hunt in the mountains is a real challenge for me. In the past, I have hunted in the Pepperbox wilderness area...in the vicinity of Stillwater reservoir. It is a forever wild area of state owned land that few ever see. I accessed it either by boat or canoe...but motors are not allowed. I remember hunting in there with a group of 4 others. On that particular day, one of us shot a nice 10 point buck. We were quite a distance back in. We began to drag that deer out at about 10 AM. We got back to our boat at 8 PM...and we still had to go several miles in the boat to get back to our vehicles. It ain't easy! Nonetheless, I wouldn't leave this area for any other. I have lived all over the east coast from here to Florida. As someone said, this truly is God's country. Yep, the taxes are high and jobs are few in number...but come on up if you have it in your heart to do so. People here are friendly. Clint |

Are you talking about the wilderness area waters Clint? Stillwater doesn't ban motors, but the ponds/lakes outback are offlimits. Beaver River Taxi is in deep ship if there is a ban on motors.

[8D] beaglefreak: my wife left Saranac Lake close to 30 years ago. Went off to college and settled in Rochester. Her folks lived till 87 & 92 yrs. old. Both gone now but she still has a few relatives and friends in Saranac. We are thinking of a long weekend this summer, she misses her home, but just not the same after they passed and their homestead was sold. Good luck in your move.

The Adirondacks Rule!!!!!......Next to the mountains of NE PA they are my next favorite spot in the USA. I hunt near speculator which is MUCH further south, but awesome country, rugged, and pristine!!! and BIG WHITETAILS.. My best to date was a 20" 10 point that weighed close to 275 lbs live weight.
We also go to Gore Mtn around the friends lake area and stay with the wildwaters crew......LOVE IT! |

Are you talking about the wilderness area waters Clint?
Yes...in particular, the area around Moser flow...which is just below Stillwater. Clint |
