Rifle in NY?

has anybody heard about being able to use rifles in all of ny next hunting season on deer?

RE: Rifle in NY?

there was a bill (or somethin) last year that would have allowed rifle in the southern tier
it either was never voted on or the vote failed or vetoed (or somethin)
as much as I would like to use my rifle in the southern tier, it is probably best & safest if it is left for the mountain regions

i hunt in a rifle zone in n.y. , and as far as im concerned a fire arm is a fire arm if you dont know whats behind your target you dont pull the trigger .

mtair,

I hear you there friend. We all know that's not the case though. I've seen some of these yahoos(no one here in particular). When the flags go up they just let the lead fly. That's why I stay away from public land whenever possible. It can get real dangerous at times. It's not worth it!

RE: Rifle in NY?

if you dont know whats behind your target you dont pull the trigger
exactly my point. Too many people don't know what's behind their target and I'd rather not see bullets flying 500 yards around where I hunt. If they can't see what's behind the target at 50 to 100 yards or even identify it at that range, what in the world will it be like with a rifle??

Ed McDonald 01-21-2004 04:26 PM

RE: Rifle in NY?

I hope they leave the Rifle areas to strictly the Mountain Regions. There are enough Yahoos out there with semi-auto shotguns cranking off 5 shot bursts. I would hate to be in the woods with a bunch of hunters with rifles ! If a hunter can't get within 100 yards of a deer, he/she shouldn't be out there and a shotgun will take a deer at that range.

mtair 01-21-2004 06:35 PM

RE: Rifle in NY?

bucknrut17, i see your point about public land . i never have hunted public land .i shot my first deer way back when with a shotgun . and honestly i have never shot a deer over 120 yards away . but i still love my rifles.

I have shotgun property in NY and would love to see it go Rifle..I really don't see what the difference is..all bullets travel too far.

doughboysigep 01-24-2004 08:46 PM

RE: Rifle in NY?

again, I would love to be able to use my rifles for southern tier hunting, I have a .44 mag winchester that isn't really much more "long range" than a shot gun, but there is a huge difference between a shotgun (say 20 ga) and a rifle (say 30.06). We are really talking about a difference between 100s of yards and miles (potentially). I don't know the exact numbers but I do know that a rifle bullet unimpeeded will travel a great didtance more than a slug. That is why no rifles in the "relatively mountainless" southern tier.

Knowing what is boyond your target is critical, but at those ranges no one can bee exactly sure (unlewss there is a big mountain in front of you).

I also have property in shotgun area and would love to see it go to rifle. My area (Van Etten) Is alot more rural than where I live (poconos pa )and we use rifle here with no more accidents than the shotgun area ..

why would you like it to go rifle???

tabby 01-25-2004 09:10 PM

RE: Rifle in NY?

Why are you guys against rifles? Many states allow rifles, and there are not problems. I would think there would be more of a problem with trigger-happy shotgunners that with rifle hunters.

I live in PA, where rifles are allowed, and I have no problems with them. I am in 1B, I think, and they are talking about making it shotgun only because of Erie. Personnally, I am ticked. I understand in city limits, but my closest neighbor is 1/2 mile away.

I guess I really can't understand where you guys are comming from because I am not put into the situation that you are in. Allowing rifles may be a bad idea, but with my experiece, I don't see that it is.

RE: Rifle in NY?

I have never been a big fan of shotgun accuracy. They have come along way with rifle barrels and sabots but I just feel more comfortable with a rifle. Ever since I was young I could never see why our area was shotgun only.
I have taken my share of deer with the shotgun both in ny and nj .. but have had a good share of deer I could have taken with the rifle due to distance or confidence.
I vote rifle in most areas but I do see that in more developed areas shotgun could be kept because people would be nervous with the change.. Bill

doughboysigep 01-26-2004 04:26 PM

RE: Rifle in NY?

tabby & 338 - see my comments above, do they make a little bit of sense?

1/2 mile = 2640 ft. = 880 yards

rifles can easily take game at 300-400-500 yards+ and can go much further
i could aim at a slight upward angle and have the bullet land miles away

the topography in PA is quite a bit more "rugged" and mountainous than a good porttion of NY. that terrain and those mountatins make excellet bullet catchers

i still stick with my opinion that shotguns are "safer" (however I understand the points about shotgun volleys, but you can volley with a rifle just as easily)

tabby 01-26-2004 04:50 PM

RE: Rifle in NY?

I under stand that a bullet can travel great distances. But under normal circumstances, it wont travel any further than a slug. They will both hit a tree before reaching any great distance. True, if you aim high, and miss, the bullet can travel very far. so can a slug. They both only land in one spot. And the chances of hitting something is very slim. Not so much in urban areas though. I hunt 2 miles from the NY border, just southwest of Jamestown. The topography at my house is very similar to much of NY, a bit more hilly, but not enough to catch a bullet. True. One can volley with a rifle. Either way, it is wrong, and shouldn't be done. IMO. I agree, shotguns are "safer", but by how much?

338 01-26-2004 05:44 PM

RE: Rifle in NY?

doughboysigep .. I see your points .. As for the topography between my place in NY and my place in PA is not much different. We do have a occasional accident in both of my areas but I think it is going to happen with either shotgun or rifle, Like tabby said a bullet is far more likely to hit a tree or the ground than anything else if it misses it's target ..
As for the "volley" My way of thinking is that if they make it rifle and not auto rifle the guys will take more time to make the first shot count than cranking out five shots like I hear so often by my place. I do not hear the volley of shots in my area of PA like I hear in NY ..
This is only my opinon and it will not make a difference in what the "big wigs" do but I don't see much of a down side to letting it go rifle .. Delaware county wich is rifle is much more populated and they don't seem to have any more problems than anywhere else. ... Be sure of your target and beyond is the key .. Bill

doughboysigep 01-26-2004 08:29 PM

RE: Rifle in NY?

Delaware Co. is more poulated than where?? It is a very, very rural county and extremely mountainous. Mountains (not hills) - that's why they allow rifle in Adirondacks & Catskills. Anyway, don't want to get too arguementative in this debate. It's interesting to compare different views.

tabby 01-26-2004 09:45 PM

RE: Rifle in NY?

I agree with doughboy about the agruementative debate. I believe i know where you guys are comming from. It is the principle. I would hate to see PA go to inline muzzle loaders. A muzzle loader that can shoot 2 inch groups at 200 yards? Its the principle. I'm out...

I beleive Delaware county is more populated then my area Van Etten (Chemung county) I agree that it is both rural and hilly .. They are hills compared to the adirondacks. My point is that if delaware is rifle chemung and others should be. Bill

RE: Rifle in NY?

I have a cabin in Potter Co. Pa. just one mile from the NY line. Being in the rifle area, I have had several bullets zip over the tree tops above me coming from the valley only a half mile away. A house on the hill nearby had a bullet come through the wall opening day of buck season two years ago. With the accuracy of the slug guns today, I wouldn't mind if Potter would go shotgun only as NY. It may be safer for all.

RE: Rifle in NY?

Man, I am sorry, I just can't get off this topic.

I can guarantee that there are NO HILLS in Chemung county that are anywhere near most of the MOUNTAINS in Delaware. (granted the Catskills aren't the Adks)
Just was looking over the topos here at work. If you look at them and compare Delaware with Chemung (or other counties) it is really easy to see. First - max elevation in Chemung ~1800' (only in a couple isolated locals) and Catskills is well over 3000' (in many areas) and I would bet that the average elevation is somewhere around 1600-1800'
Second - just by looking at the topos you can see the difference between the two areas; Catskills is mostly mountains and narrow valleys whereas the southern tier is hilly and wide valleys (I admit there are some "rugged" gound, but no very much comaratively); also by looking at land use on the maps you can get a feel for the remoteness (lots of solid green [forestland] with a lot of tight contours in Catskills vs. some green but much more white [open ground/ag land, etc] and wide contours mixed with somewhat tight contours and very little tight contours in southern tier)

So again, NO just because Delaware (actually all the Catskills) is rifle doesn't mean Chemung, Tioga, Cortland, Broome, etc. should be. (actuall a portion of Broome is - acroos the Susquehanna R. in the "foothills" of the Catskills)

Again, sorry for another repost, i'll try and stay away, but its hard to stay away from a good debate.

tabby 01-27-2004 10:25 AM

RE: Rifle in NY?

I know that can open a can of worms, I HOPE it doesn't. I am just saying we all have different views for different reasons.

I have had a few bullets wiz by me, and it is weird to say the least. Once while I was out on a big @$$ lake fishing.

I don't think it is the weapon, I think it is the irrespossible people who use the weapon. In many areas of NY, it should stay shotgun, and in many areas of PA, it should go shotgun.

There was another thread on this and it listed the bill no. alot of the rea's being talked about would remain shotgun only. To lazy to do a search right now.

Hello,you anti's
I don't know wher you live;you certainly don't know New York!
Orange County is in the Mid Hudson Valley. It is South of the Catskills, and East of the Shaungunks. It is not in the Mountains.
We do have a problem here.Every year,Ditzy Polititions try to take away our right to use a rifle to hunt with.We are very fortunate that people like you are in the minority.
We live in fear that one day, rifles will account for as many injuries as shotguns. On that day, those Pols, will have their Way.
You people who think that a shotgun is not very dangerous, are the ones who cause the most accidents with firearms.
Frank

RE: Rifle in NY?

Shotguns are dangerous. Rifles are dangerous at a longer distance. Contact my buddy, Randy, at Tar-Hunt.com and he will give you the skinny on slugs and slug guns. He got me started hunting with them. I use my pump in Maine with great success. It's an area where you are lucky to see 100 feet ahead of you. Just right for slugs. We generally get our deer inside of 25 yards. In Pa. around my cabin, the longest shot I ever taken on a deer was less than 75 yards. I still love my rifles for varmints, elk, moose and caribou.

Good hunting!

Charlie P,
You are just the type of person that I would expect to get the 'clap'from.
I notice that you,and the other 4 Anti's,have no Profile.
An educated guess would be that none of you are real New Yorkers. You may be TRolls, but you certainly are not like any New York Hunter that I have ever seen.
I am well aware of the dangers associated with hunting.I.too,have heard the sound of a bullet that had to be close. But the only time that I was actually shot by a Hunter,it was with a shotgun.
Most,if not all, acccidents with firearms are caused by carelessness.I respect everyone's opinion, but you will never get me to believe that people become more careless if they are allowed to hunt with a rifle.

You know I was just thinking, Vestal wasn't on the original list of area's that was supposed to go to rifle. (I actually read the bill Franke how about you) but I should push for it to go rifle. That way in a seson or two most of the land owners around here would stop gun hunting on their properties and I could get more land to bow hunt on. ;):D[&:]

Our town is already so parnoid about gun hunting that they went with a 1000 ft rule from any occupied dwelling. This might be thing that turns it into a bow only zone.

Simple Fact - rifle bullets travel farther, therefore, more risk where there are not as many natural bullet stoppers.

By the way the only REAL NY is Upstate NY!!!!
