Q#1 A friend of mine who lives in Eastern MA wants to do some deer hunting in NYS next year (rifle). It being his first time, I told him he would need a hunter safety certificate to hunt there. Needless to say, he cannot drive to NY once a week to take the class. Would a Massachusetts safety cert. be sufficient for him to get a hunting license in NYS??
Q#2 Is it worth traveling to hunt the Catskill park or is it a zoo during shotgun??
Thanks

All your riend would need to hunt in NY is either his Massachussets hunting liscence or his hunters ed. certificate.
Also to answer your other question...
You can hunt the entire eastern half of New York with a Rifle (Centerfire, Shotgun or Pistol are legal). This goes for all counties with the exception of Albany county I believe, which is bow only.
Once you go westerward past Delaware County, or Northwest in parts of Ostego county it becomes shotgun only.
Hope this helps.
