WV mast
Im telling you, it looks like another sad year around here for mast in the woods this year. This will be the second year in a row that there doesnt seem to be anything as far as acorns in the woods around here. Ive been to lots of areas scouting and weve got a bumper crop of hickory nuts but thats about all. Someone even told me that they think alot of squirrels even died off from last year due to lack of mast. I know last year I had to hunt the edges of the fields cause thats where the deer were coming to feed since the woods were so bare and I guess that gonna be the same MO for this year.
We had a good snow storm here last year and afterwards I went in the back of the house and found a dead doe laying in the field - no marks, bullet holes or anything - guess she just made it to the field and thats all the further to try and get a meal. I live in Greenbrier county

Mord...my camp is in Braxton county, and between turkey hunting and mushroom hunting this spring, we found 11 dead deer. The hunting pressure is low on our land, so we figured that the vast majority of these died from starvation. Two were nice young-looking bucks.
I found a couple white oaks that are fairly well loaded with acorns, but I heard that overall, the mast is looking poor AGAIN. The deer are really going to be hurting if it' s another winter like last year. You' re right about hickory nuts..They' re everywhere.
I don' t think that humungous ice storm helped the acorns any.

I' ve been out a couple of times this year in Kanawha and Roane Counties anf it looks like it' s going to be a hit and miss year around here. Some trees have and some don' t. GOOD LUCK!! Find the acorns and you' ll find the deer.

I' m a out of stater that comes in for a annual hunting trip during gun season. I have relitives from Lost Creek, in Harrison county. It' s a once a year all guy trip for a week and hunting is just half of it if you know what I mean. My son and I where down during spring turkey season and I' ll have to admit, I was supprised by the number of deer we saw! They where almost stepping on us two mornings in a row. We didn' t get a bird but I did find a new set up that I cant wait to try out. I' ll report back and let you know how I made out. -Ken

It' s hit or miss where I am at too. I have only seen some sparse acorns here and there on the ground. I thought that last year' s zero acorns would lead to a bumper crop this year, but guessed wrong! I don' t remember it freezing the buds, but who knows...
