PA Elk Hunting??
I know that PA has a limited Elk Hunting season,100 permits I think. Can anyone give any details on this? I know its a lottery , but could someone buy a lottery winners tag from them? When does it start ? Is their a bow season on them or just a general season? These I have read are Eastern Elk, but with a slight Rocky Mountain Strain. As reintroduced by the RMEF, is this a fack also?
Thanks~ Ben

Ben, your right about the lottery system for the elk permits....I' m not sure how many are available this year. I' m sure someone will let us know. AND, I don' t believe you can sell your permit...but again, unsure. The elk hunt I believe last year was the Mon-Wed the third week of Nov....that is the week after the archery season ends and before the 3 day bear season prior to Thanksgiving. The season is any legal weapon of PA...that would include Centerfire Rifle, Compound bow, Stick bow, Flintlock or Inline Muzzleloader and I believe legal handguns. And, I believe you are right about the strain of elk.....
Please note:....these animals are not truly wild elk, you can virtually walk up to them and unless hunting with a bow or flintlock, it' s not much of a hunt..IMO

This link should give you all you need to know

I was just up to elk country the other day to see the elk. They were bugleing pretty good, and we saw some really large bulls, and about 25 elk altogether. In the core viewing areas where the elk are just about tame, you aren' t allowed to hunt them. I don' t know how the elk react outside those areas, in order to form an opion on the difficulty of the hunt.

RE: PA Elk Hunting??
i went to one of the elk viewing areas 2 season ago , and watched hunters (not hunting elk) walk within 50 yards of them they got a little nervous but not spooked granted it was mostly cows and a couple spikes , i don' t think a full blown bull would be much different though , i know someone who watched two bulls spar in someones yard about 25 yards off the road. so i' d have to agree with rob that they are not totally wild at least not up in benezette , however you can' t hunt there (elk ) either.

RE: PA Elk Hunting??
Thanks for all the comments and links. Seems it may be as easy as trying to hunt them here in VA, Here you just have to use your deer tags( VA does not want them here) they have migrated from KY. All you have to do is find them.
