snow
in mountains around clinton county is about 6 inchs of snow.it is on leaves heavy and wet.fog is terrible.drizzling as of now at 9 pm friday.sat just as bad on drizzle and cool weather /fog.
roads in woods are mess.rain/hunters/pipeliners have ruts all over.deer are bedded down, i have 7 in my yard for last 2 days, they have not moved.most will road hunt on sat with in-lines,i dont see anyone going into woods in this. most of others will just sit along pipelines.the deer are not on pipelines this year.too much acorns........ deer have really not done much lately.i watched those 7 deer for 2 days and they never left those 2 acorn trees in my yard.they bedded down over bank only 100 yds from my house.then at dark up they come and eat under those 2 trees . so if that is what is happening in woods i dont see deer moving very far from where they sleep this year.woods are like jungle this year. |
Talked to my brother in Loganton (4D) and he has 6 inches,,,he was going to take the snowmobile up on the mountain to check things out,,,he said he had power outages due to alot of limbs and trees down,,,you guys be careful and good luck!

Man those woods were dangerous on Friday! About 30 minutes after first light, trees started cracking and popping. Huge oaks were splitting right in half from the weight of the snow on the branches. There's tons of new browse on the ground now!
Decided on a fast walk across a SGL ridgetop loaded with acorns friday morning, hoping to cut a track and get on it for a stalk. Covered a mile and a half, never cut a track. Dropped down to the bottom and stillhunted foodplot edges back, still no tracks. Dang, hunting these deer that don't chit, don't leave tracks, don't rub trees and don't eat deer food has got me baffled. Maybe I need to hunt harder, hunt deeper, and hunt smarter because the tactics that I've used for the last 30 years just ain't working on state land anymore. Maybe I should get Carl Roe up here to teach me to hunt squirrels. Then on Saturday, with roughly 8-10 inches of snow on the ground, a buddy and I hunted clearcuts deep in the Tioga State Forest in DMAP area 1618. Had a very nice 17" 5 pointer within 15 yards. This was the 4th deer I've seen in 2 weeks of hunting every day. He was a big deer, but that 3rd point on one side just didn't look to be 1 inch. Could've shot him a dozen times. Also seen a doe, and my buddy refused to shoot her with the inline to fill his DMAP tag. Very tough hunting with all the saplings hanging from the weight of the snow and the visibilty was 10 yards AT BEST in most places. But the deer were in the open woods because they didn't want to be in the thick stuff that was hanging any more than I did. Was real easy to get disoriented Saturday with the fog, the hanging branches and snow. Had to dig out the compass a few times. Also, we cut more bear tracks than we did deer tracks, including one that was the biggest track I've ever seen anywhere, including griz tracks in British Columbia. This bear has to be close to a state record. Pressure was non-existant Saturday, and very few camps were in. Heading to farm country north of Rt 49 Friday to fill our 3A tags. |

Just imagine how much browse the storm provided for the deer in the northern tier. Not only did the storm provide browse for this winter ,it probably did more to open the canopy than all the clearcuts in the whole northern tier and will produce more browse and regeneration in the future than reducing the herd.

I checked 2 recent cleacuts in a DMAP area yesterday, one fenced and one unfenced. Maybe it's to soon to tell, but I didn't see any difference in either one of them in what is popping up. JUNK. |
One thing to remember is that the past growing season was about as good as it gets for seedlings and other vegetation. Many years the summers are so dry that even raspberries and blackberries dry up along pipelines or power lines and as a result seedling growth is very limited and many seedlings don't survive.

this summer i was not out almost at all scouting.dad is just too sick.but when i got out i found berries where i never saw them in 40 years around trails.bears are just walking trails eating.the pipelines grass is up almost to my shoulders about 5 ft that would be highest i ever saw it in longtime. rain did it,rained more in hot july/august . my brother was out sat in this awful rain trying to get doe.he said he was about only one hunting out of a truck.he has stand very close to road on sfl.he counted around 22 trucks road hunting with in-lines in about 2 hr time. he thinks he was only one using a flintlock.snow was 4 inchs he said and drizzle all day.his son said,DAD WHY DONT WE JUST ROAD HUNT LIKE OTHERS. real lousy day it was. dont want to get off track but be careful,HN1 FLU is hitting us hard here in clinton county.8 cases at hospital in 1 week.guys the temps on flu are over 105 degrees.i never heard of such high temps on flu in my life.a lot are kids 16/18 years old.mostly girls too, dont know why. i bet i wash my hands 10 times a day.stay away from all functions.stay away from grocery stores when a lot of people are there,i know thats hard to do. friends,ITS BAD and its being covered up daily how bad it is. |
