NRA member for MANY years. :patriot:
|
Life member of the NRA
|
I was a member for many years. That all changed a couple years ago.
At that time, they were sending out a hunting video, then after a couple weeks they'd send a bill for the video. With the bill was a letter. It said that if I didn't want the video I was to have returned it in the original packaging. I never read anything that stated that when I first recieved the video. By then, I had already thrown away the packaging. Every couple weeks they'd send a letter to pay them the money. I never paid. Eventually they left me alone. A couple months later, I recieved another video. It was the same exact one I received a month earlier. I read everything on and in the package. There was nothing that said anything about returning the video. After a couple weeks I started getting bills again with another letter stating I was supposed to return the video in original packaging if I didn't want it. I called the phone number in one of the nasty letters and explained that this was my seond video they sent me. I explained that nowhere did it state I was to return it if I didn't want it. They basically just apologized. I told them I thought it was pretty bad that they would stoop low enough to scam their own members like that. They just apologized and didn't even try to defend themselves. I informed them that I was a member for many years but I would not renew my membership to an organization that would pull something like that. I couldn't believe they would do something like that. That is a scam in my book. Somewhere in some forum I posted this and found several others that had the same scam. I realize they do a lot for our gun rights but I feel they waste too much money. They seem geared toward guys with deep pockets and not us little guys. |
I have been a member.
|
I was a 5 year member and believe in supporting them.
However, once you **** me off it's hard to reel me back in... After the never ending harassing phone calls almost bi-weekly I opted out. Their marketing tactics turned me off, sorry Charleton Heston (RIP) and Ted Nugent, but you need to work on that aspect too! For that matter Buck Masters is the same breed, too ignorant for their own good! |
If ever there was a time to be a member-it is now! Our gun rights and our constitution is in severe danger. We need to have someone stand up for us. I know that sometimes the NRA can be anoying however they are fighting a good fight. There is no-one like the Nuge who stands up for hunters in this country. Like him or not he tells it like it is!!!:patriot::patriot: We need to focus on whats important to us. I've been a member for over twenty five years and proud of it.
|
30 Years a member and proud of it.If you're not willing to pull an oar get the hell out of the boat and swim!

|
Life member.

i was till they became a pain in the ass on the phone
|
I had the same thing with a book a while back. buckmasters did the video thing to me. I quit buckmasters over it but still belong to the NRA. I feel that the fight they are fighting for us is too important to walk away from. Especially now!
|
Makes you wonder why an organization would stoop to such a tactic.
Some of the letters were on the nasty side, telling me that I was letting down fellow members and such. In their mind it was OK to scam their members but I was the bad guy for not falling for their scam. I wonder who gave the OK, inside the NRA, to do that to loyal members? I realize they do a lot of good. The problem is with hunters who don't vote or vote the wrong way. Elected politicians are the ones that will take our guns. Vote them out and much of our problem is solved. Ever wonder how many of those NRA members voted for Obama or other anti-gun congressmen? They are a member, yet they vote for the very people that will take away our guns. I'm no longer an NRA member but I vote. |

If you do belong to the NRA, do you ever donate any of your money when they ask for it? Do you ever make donations to the NRA-ILA or the NRA political vicory fund?
I will confirm that I am a Life NRA member and that I do make donations to both of these organizations within the NRA. |
Life member, 16 years on local Friends of the NRA banquet committee, longtime grassroots volunteer, ILA contributor. Half of the money raised at state FNRA banquets, comes back to the state in the form of grants for youth programs, shooting programs and other worth while projects.
Not particularly impressed with some of their recent moves in PA, notably sticking their nose into the xbow debate and their ill-conceived and perfidious opposition to recent legislation intended to finally put some teeth in our poaching laws. Two biggest complaints I've heard from members during many years at the Eastern Sports and Outdoors show, are about the constant mailings/phone calls and the Chinese-made stuff they hand out or sell. Anyone that doesn't want to be constantly solicited, can call member services and ask to be removed from their soliciation list: 800-672-3888. As for the unsolicited videos and books, US Postal regs state that anything you receive in the mail that you didn't request, is yours to keep, or send back. Your choice. |

The NRA scammed me too. I belonged for 30 yrs. I got the video scam too, then 2 yrs later they took my membership dues and gave them to the ILA. Even calling them on the phone several times they would not put the money back to my membership.
|
After a long time membership,I quit for awhile for the same reasons Windwalker and Denny already expressed. Unwanted books in the mail and receiving phone calls, four to five days a week! But, with the growing # 's of idiots trying to take my guns,I renewed my membership.

I agree. Individually, we are not much of a force but united we are a mountain. |
The NRA tries to portray itself as the voice of gun owners and hunters, but the reality is that NRA members are still a minority among both gun owners and hunters. There are what about 4 million NRA members or so? There are way MORE gun owners and hunters out there than this number. Many will never join because they don't exactly care for their rhetoric or tactics.

And the 4 million or so members pick up the slack for the rest of them. You may not like their rhetoric or tatics but the bottom line they are the ones with the muscle to stop the anti second ammendment crowd. I am not going to play nice if someone breaks in my home and takes something, and I am not going to play nice when someone trys to take away a constitutional right.

Maybe so, but my main point here is that maybe the gun owners and hunters who don't join the NRA just don't see the gun issue with the same level of importance. Most NRA members probably see the 2nd amendment as their most cherished right. Other gun owners and hunters probably don't or just have other things that are more important to them to worry about. Besides, there are more hunting opportunities throughout this country than there ever were. Hunters are needed and many states are trying real hard to keep hunters hunting and trying to recruit young hunters for the future. What exactly will hunters hunt with if hunting guns get outlawed like some people think will happen? Surely bowhunting only won't be able to control game populations as well as gun hunting? I think a good many hunters realize that it is far fetched that hunting guns will be banned anytime soon, thus they don't feel the need to join a group like the NRA. They maybe wrong in their thinking, but as of yet they still have their guns and many don't feel that it's only due to the NRA that they still do.

What good is all these hunting oportunities do us without the right to bear arms. By the way, the NRA does an awesome job for young hunters. Next-Who do you think will fight for us if the Dems. try to change the Constitution? It could never happen you say? Its guy's as yourself that stand by and let your neighbor get the sh*t kicked out of him and say "this ain't my fight" This attitude is is the CANCER, i'm afraid, that will undo everything our forefathers fought and died for (OUR RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS) I for one will go down swinging with my Bros. cause, if it ain't worth fighting for-it ain't worth having.!!!!!! Hunters who don't see their second amendment rights as important as those who support the NRA or as you say, have better things to do, are spineless and un-informed.:devil: |
I see many of my former co-workers(I'm laid off) that were Bush haters and general Repulican haters i have relatives that are the same way.
Yet they hunt and own many guns. they made it clear to me that they would not vote Republican. I'm not sure how many were NRA members. Look how many labor unions across the country supported Obama and wanted its members to vote for him. Ya think some of them were NRA members also? Like I said, I was a member for many years (about 20, I'd guess) and yes, I've sent donations. I just don't take being scammed lightly. Others might not care, I do. I'm sure if any of you were scammed by any other organization you'd feel the same way and quit supporting them. Some might make an exception because its the NRA, I don't. If all NRA members/gun owners voted the right way, how'd Obama get in there? |

Yes, the NRA uses some heavy handed fund raising techniques and incessantly begs for money. I think that they could do better by asking less often and not wasting so much member money asking for more.
That having been said, WE NEED THE NRA! No other pro gun organization comes close to the efforts and results the NRA gives us. Do I wish they'd find a better strategy for raising funds than beating us senseless with mailings and phone calls? Yes! Would I ever let my dues lapse with all the liberals out there trying to destroy the second amandment? NO! We'll all feel pretty foolish for complaining about a few mailings and phone calls when the ATF shows up at your door demanding that you hand em over:bash::bash::bash: |
[quote=Steve863;3419372]Show me where states have had to close hunting seasons because of gun laws that prevented hunters from having guns to hunt with??
It's not about hunting. It's about our constitutional right to bear arms. So you're saying it's ok for them to outlaw my snubnosed 38 that I have in my nightstand because I don't use it for hunting? That kind of attitude is exactly what is going to give our 2nd ammendment rights a death sentence. I have been a member for 12 years (ever since my dad paid for my first years dues when I was in high school) The nra will fight for my rights to have any guns whether they are used for hunting or not. |
NRA Life member since 1984.

To me, the solution is to keep out the Dems. If every gun owner registered to vote (its free by the way) and voted the right way, we wouldn't have a problem.
Back when Clinton ran against George H.W. Bush, I had a list of local NRA members (my zipcode), who were not registered to vote. Armed with that printout and a pile of mail-in registration forms that I'd picked up, went around over a period of a few weeks, knocking on doors and encouraging those members to register to vote. Got more than a little bit of grief from several, who assumed I was working for the Bush campaign, although I told them up front that I was an NRA volunteer, the NRA wanted members to be able to vote and that's how I had their names/addresses (NRA/ILA had sent them to me). One guy got really wound up, told me he was "voting union" (Clinton), cursed the Republicans for a coupla minutes, then told me to get the bleep out of his driveway. In my experiences, there are quite a few guys in PA who own firearms and hunt, but still vote how their unions tell them to, come election time. Their unions ain't encouraging them to vote Republican. I've helped out in the NRA booth at the Eastern Sports and Outdoors show for years. Almost every year some yahoo will come up and rant about the Repubs "sticking it to the working man", the NRA is all about supporting Republicans and that he will never join, etc. Two years ago an older guy stood there for 15 minutes in front of the booth, yelling about NRA standing for Nat'l Republican Assoc. and shouting all sorts of bizaare crap, before the gathering crowd booed him on his way down the aisle. |
I pay for my membership every year at my local outdoor show. It's been a tradition for me since Hillary was elected to the NY Senate
