Turkey season

Looks like great weather for the opener. I'll be chasing these things with a bow again this year. Would like to hear from viewers through the season how your outing's went. If you harvested a bird and some detail about your hunt.

HAVE FUN and BE SAFE!

That picture was taken in Western Pa and has been on Huntingpa.com with the Pixcontroller , at least it looks like the same location has been showing turkeys, coons, deer and anything else going by....

It was a 50/50 day as for weather opening day. The temps couldn't have been better. But on top of that mountain,it was blowing like crazy. Because of the wind direction coming out of the south west, I could not locate a spot out of the wind. At nine-twenty, had a bird come in silent. Just happen to turn my head and there he was. Busted! That was my opener. Hope the rest of you faired better!

You are correct that the pics are from a western PA webcam. I used the image save feature to "snap" these live images. It's really fun and addicting. I have photos of a bearded hen that frequented the bait pile this year as well. I don't care for the carcass cam, though. The hawks and 'yotes don't do much for me, but I can sit and watch the turkeys peck for a long time...

My season came to an end today. Called in two Jakes five minutes after seven to within 15 feet. At 8:25am, got a hen to respond to my calling. After her second response,a gobbler cut loose in the same spot. Back tracked about 10 yds. and set-up. Worked the birds for about 18 minutes. Four hens along with three long beards came into range. Bird had little over 9inch beard. BRING BACK SPROUL

That'll do. nice job. I didn't get out on Saturday but I've been out Monday and today. I think the heat has them crazy. They gobble their heads off the first 1/2 hour of daylight until the sun clears the ridgetops then quiet the rest of the morning. Of course they could be with hens too.

Took this guy yesterday in the Mass opener... 19 & 1/2 lb, 9" beard, 1 & 1/8" and 1 & 1/4" spurs. He hung up on me strutting on a ridge alone around 50 yards... I slipped in another 10 yards behind some thick trees and got a shot off at about 40 yards when he was looking for the sound!

Got my second bird this morning at around 6:30. At daybreak a jake and hen pitched down into the area where I was. Soon the other 3 jakes that I saw yesterday joined up and then a hen came from another direction. I could see the birds out in the middle of the field and they weren't interested in my decoys. In the distance I heard a lone gobble so I started to call. He got closer and came right in. I shot him at 25 yds just before he reached the decoys.20 1/4 pounds1 1/4" spurs9" beard

Ed it is Easy only when things work out perfectly which rarely happens. That is what keeps me coming back.....never knowing how it will all turn out. Just for the record I went to a buddies turkey camp for the past 2 days to help with some camp chores, drink some brews and get away for a bit. I didn't bring my gun since I am limited outbut tried to help him with the calling and set up since he is a lot newer at it that I am. We located 2 good birds, got set up on them in different areas and couldn'tget either one to come in so that is how it goes. I felt bad for him and reallyhoped to get a bird hot enough to close the deal but no luck.

The turkeys have most of the advantages over hunters. They can fly, run muchfaster andhave better eyesight. They are vocal and obsessed with breeding helps to give us the edge. Gaining familiarity with the terrain and remembering past encounters helps us to unravel their patterns.

I have to laugh. This morning I took a ride and glassed the area where I got my 2 birds and lo and behold there is another mature bird that moved in. He was along a field edge in full strut and looking for some ladies. Oh well if nobody catches up to him he will be at least a 3 1/2 year old next spring.

Took my Niece out today. We went to the top of Derry ridge again. We had one cut loose at 5:40am,less than 100yds. We set-up,the bird gobbles again on the roost. Five minutes later,he gobbles again. I tell her when he hits the ground,I'll start calling. Two minutes later, just like someone pulled the blinds shut! It got almost as dark as it was at 5:15. Fog rolls in heavy. 35 minutes later,it starts raining and blowing. We can't see no more than 15 yds. It stayed like that until 9:37am. Later, called in two hens and we had a buck about twelve yards from us. His new antlers where about three inches above his head. Never heard that gobbler again.

Raining like heck here and dark. Just had a thunder storm blow through which is strange for this time of year here in Vt. Hard to get a bird in bad weather. I usually don't call much other than some soft tree yelps early in the gray light. I always figure the toms are roosting with some hens anyways and will usually wait until at least the sun comes up B-4 I really do much aggressive calling. Good luck the next time you go for him. He will probably roost in the same area since he wasn’t bothered much. Sometimes soft calling will sway the hens to you and he will follow.
