Why is spring turkey hunting till noon only?

Agreed Germain. Thats what I've always read. that the hens head for the nest late in the morning to incubate the eggs and hunter disturbance at that time could jeopardize the nest.

Yes, that is the reasoning behind the season hours, though this scenario has been proven to be essentially an old wives tale evidenced by the overwhelming majority of states allowing all day spring hunting. Remember, hen's prefer nesting in brushy areas, downed tree tops, brushpiles, etc. Hunting in PA is by calling only, according to the law. So unless you are busting the brush trying to flush turkeys like grouse, impact on nesting hens would be minimal. PA only recently concurred that allowing two gobblers in the spring would not have a measurable impact on turkey populations. Once again, common knowledge throughout much of the turkey's range that high rate of harvest among males causes no negative and lasting effects on the population. Both are just more examples of the PGC always bringing up the rear in wildlife mgt, even when they pretend to be leading the parade.

Without looking I don't know the states that allow all day hunting.I wonder how their hunter numbers compare to ours.
You may have to call but I don't know many turkey hunters that sit in the same spot until quitting time.Alot run and gun or as some call it cutt and run.So yes they could easily bump a hen off it's nest.
And I am against all day hunting in PA.

Another antiquated regulation , like no Sunday hunting...
Personally, I'm ready to quit hunting by mid day and I have not had a lot of luck calling birds past early afternoon, so it makes no difference to me, but I have aREAL hard time believing that afternoon hunting has a significant negative effect on the breeding population...
In my experience, most afternoon gobbler hunting involves sitting around and hunting them like deer, in which case I would much rather go fishing...
But a real threat to nesting success..??.. I seriously doubt it...

Especially since there are more turkeys today than chickens. If the PGC gave half of the effort to bringing back the population of "wild" pheasants instead of worrying about a few turkeys, you might see more than 2 guys small game hunting in a season.

Not just the PGC it's the PANWTF also.Studies are being done in other states on the impact of afternoon nesting.
Some day you guys might get your wish.Kinda like the deer populations and HR.Nobody had a problem killing a couple more deer each year but now that the populations are down those same people are yelling bloody murder.
Maybe we can do the same with the turkey populations.

IMHO, PA has quite a few "run and gunners" and plenty more who simply don't obey the "calling only" rules. How many of us has been scared s__tlesswhen being stalked by some clown while we sat calling?
I have no problem getting out of the woods by noon and leaving the birds alone. Besides, there are trout, crappies and walleyes to be caught!
