RE: Rifle season 2008 is history
2b has an incredible amount of tags allocated each year and come close to selling them all by the final bell. |
RE: Rifle season 2008 is history
2B is mostly private property, so the residents are buying the tags mostly, after they come home from camp.
Other WMU's get more sales from guys that live elsewhere. This is just my impression. |
RE: Rifle season 2008 is history
Beautiful season.
Had snow on the ground for all but one day; Saw somebucks, including one dandy in the valley behind camp; Saw deer every day but one; Dozens of deer taken in the immediate vicinity, includingseveral nice bucks (one neighbor's son killed a decent 8pt on the last day, 300 yards from my place); Finally got to spend the entire two weeks (17 days, actually)at camp and it only took 48 years from the first time I hunted there. ;) |
RE: Rifle season 2008 is history
I had a good season this year, last year we got two buck and this year we didn't even see one in rifle season. We did harvest three doe, which is more than we are usually willing to take.
Hunted eight days, with the first day hunting the morning and evening, other seven days 3:00 to 5:00 evening hunts. Saw deer 5 of the 8 days, you can't complain about that for the hours I put in. The last day of the season I had five antlerless deer in front of me for fifteen minutes, two doe and three young one. At 4:50 I figured there would be no buck coming, so I had to decide which doe I should take. One of the doe chased another from the spot it was eating, figuring the one doing the chasing was the older doe, I shot the other one and assumed the older doe would alow the other fawn to stay with her for the winter. The first Saturday I had my ten year old grandson with me, we hunted from 3 to 5, until 4:25 we had the corn husker in the field, but we didn't see any deer after that. My grandson enjoyed seeing two rabbits run out of the field for the cover of the woods, so it wasn't a wasted evening. Monday evening the farmer came and chopped the field, again he didn't leave until around 4:30, within ten minutes I had seven deer out feeding in the soybeans and winter peas, no buck came out until dark. My only complain is, why can'tI or my son let my grandson fill one of our antlerless tags legally, what is the difference if I shoot an antlerelss deer or he does it for me? Even if I apply for DMAP tags, he still isn't allowed to harvest an antlerless deer. |
RE: Rifle season 2008 is history
It does seem totally ridiculous that we have created the mentored youth hunt andyet those youth cant shoot an antlerless deer. The PGC has told us that junior license holders 12-16 are not statistically significant when it comes to the relaxed AR's for them (which I agree with) and yet they restrict the mentored youth under 12, which has to be a very small number, to bucks only!?!?!?!?
Makes no sense to me. |

ORIGINAL: bluebird2 I hunted 5C and saw a grand total of 3 antlerless deer in 10 days of hunting. Of course .like archery hunters ,I didn't hunt from dawn to dusk but I did hunt 10 of the 12 days. No one in our group of six harvested a deer and we only missed the opportunity to harvest 1 legal buck during the concurrent season. You mention bawanajim doing nothing to contribute to the management of the herd. Yet I always read your posts where you state wanting to have the right to kill any deer you wish. It is evident by your lack of deer sightings that you and your hunting crew have done a smash up job killing off every button buck and doe with your I want to have the right to kill whatever walks in front of me attitude. Congratulations on your deer management techniques in your area, I say this because you want to blame others for mismanaging the deer herd. If you are not seeing deer it's because of people like you who prefer to have the ability to use no discretion when hunting. You are killing off the future population when shooting off the current year's generation of button buck and fawn doe. But do what you want and blame the PAGC and everyone else for your inability to find and shoot deer. One more thing ...What good are you doing for the management of the deer herd in your area? How are you helping to build up the population and create bigger buck??? And PLEASE... don't give me more PAGC stats, I am asking you to give me an answer from your intellect not recite stats and reports. |

Even if I apply for DMAP tags, he still isn't allowed to harvest an antlerless deer. Also made it a point to be out almost every evening around 4PM. Later in the first week andthe second week, heard shots every evening, some close by. Once most of the hunters were gone, deer quickly resumed their normal routines of coming out to feed towards dusk. That extra half hour was a great idea, should never have taken so long to get it adopted. Kinda messed up the one night because instead of climbing into my ladder stand that overlooks a hollow full of thorn trees, stood at the bottom of the ladder. Caught sight of several doe sneaking thru one shooting lane but too late for a shot. Had I been up in the stand, would've probably seen them coming in time to shoot one in the open. I think some are working on that last part, to see if a mentor can "give" a doe tag to the youth next year? |
