They smell very musty...
I have never encountered the smell from a distance, but have noticed the odor lingering around bait sites in the past that we jumped the bears off of.
Not sure about what you encountered.

Like humans some stink and others don't but when you smell a stank bear you know it, they can get pungant when wet
