COUGARS ARE HERE
i hope you got to read the usa today on friday.
it had article from 4 states, arkansas, missouri,,nebraska, montana. they talked about CONFIRMED cougars in those states and others.. 10 confirmed sighting in missouri alone. they said they found kitten and confirming litters also. the DNR shot 1 and it was WILD cougar, not tame. also they figure what is causing this is they are migrating more towards north central usa. they said that no cougars were in these states from 1906 to now. they also said they had sighting and it was confirmed when 1 was shot by farmer ,another by a forestry dnr person. soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, well ,are NON -BELIEVERS ready.;) |
RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
Here we go again. I know from reading that 'panthers' were in NC PA back in the 1800's. Our cabin had an old map of the area showing where these were shot and by who. So why not believe they are coming back? Sproulman - our cabin is up on Hyner Run. As you know that is big country there. Plenty of room for an animal as elusive as a cougar to roam and remain unseen. My only question is now that there are more roads, al be it they are dirt roads, why hasn't someone cut a track duing the winter snow? You would think that one of these critters would cross a road sometime in search of food.

I AGREE with you on tracks in snow and lack of sighting during winter.. how many of us know what track looks like? personelly, i think we are looking at cougars that are not too many. according to DNR guy who shot cougar in those states, he said they are ROAMING over 300 miles, from state to state. so, we may only be looking a cat or 2 in pa.that may ROAM in and out of state.. most feel our cougars are coming from NEW YORK STATE. cougar is real elusive.. did you know that cougar group has a CONFIRMED TRACK from CLINTON COUNTY. they do have picture of it on the internet.. so, if cougars roam a lot and dont stay in area, its hard to get track or follow there movements.. if WCO from clearfield in 1990 or sowould have met with me, we would have had a CONFIRMED TRACK to put on here. he stated to me,SPROUL GROUND IS TO HARD AND I DONT BELIEVE THEY EXIST. so, there you go. i KNOW what i saw, tail too.. when you see cougar in woodsit will in NO WAY look like a bobcat. if i was cougar, i would head SOUTH where its warmer and lots of food in winter,i would not stay up here and live off MICE .meeeow:D |

RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
LEts get this straight i do not beleive there is cougars here in PA. That said i was hunting this year deer driving when i came upon a track. A big track. Not a bear track to big to be a coyote. I asked a guy in the group and he said it was a cougar track. I thought he was joking but he said thats what it was. He is a taxadermist too. I dont know. But it was a big track. definetly not a bear. WHAT ELSE IS OUT THEIR.i guess it could have been a black panther.

RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
if you read their entire site you will see that in RED sighting and were confirmed by us wildlife .blue was their scientist.
it does show a lot of sighting in NEW YORK,600 as of 1965. pa was leader with 1400 sighting..that big area in RED in pa. is CLINTON COUNTY. cant give you much more than what they have, read everything on their site. sighting here have been quite, not hearing any right now. but 3 years ago on beech creek rd off rt 144 ,clinton /centre county, boy, a lot of sighting of cougar from people that know difference from bobcat/cougar. i just wish that WCO from clearfield would have come out and met with me to take tracks. |
RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
They don't leave tracks in muddy or snow covered roads 'cause they're too clever and have learnt theyselfs to leap over such places without leavin' nary a mark. Same reason none have been hit on any of our roads yet...they can glide over such obstacles with one bound.
Might find the odd track in the areas between divided highways, though. |

RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
This may be just rumor, but, I've heard that when a cougar needs to cross a road they have a sasquatch carry em across. |
RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
Interesting in that both reports in Illinois are pretty recent and indicate that some are crossing the Mississipi. There have been other unsubstantiated reports of POSSIBLE cougar sightings in southern Illinois. Given the high deer population and plenty of cover in the hills and river bottoms of southern Illinois, I wouldn't be surprised if the reports from there become more common.

bronko 22000,DID YOU KNOW FARMER OFF RT120 AT HYNER,PA. REPORTED HE SAW A COUGAR 2 TIMES.
they were sitting on their back porch when it came by. this farmer has lived there all his life and knows what a bobcat looks like. i heard that WCO did investigate it but i never heard results. |
RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
I suppose it's very possible that cougars are in PA. 20 years ago if someone told me they saw a coyote around here I would have LMAO . Now they are a common sight.
|
RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
Ahhhhhhhhhhh antother mountain lion thread.
Bring em on ..... I'm ready!! |
RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
There were alot of coyotes in pa in 1988.
|
RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
There were "lots" of coyotes in PA back in the 70s, at least in the northern tier counties. Back then many of the farmers thought they were "coydogs" though. Saw my first one in the late 70s or early 80s, along the NY borderin NEPotter County.
The documented history of 'yotes in PA, goes back much farther than that. |
RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
Near our camp, located in Hamilton County a dead deer was found 40 feet up a tree. All of a sudden the deer were hanging out in town. What else could cause that ???? Last year we had a wolf run across road in front of us. This year we counted 7 moose on our land. There are no fences around state borders.

RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
Butch - of course you have photo's of some of this.

RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
Moose have wandered thru - there is a small pop in the Adirondacks.

RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
I realize the thread was started concerning mountain lions, but talk of wolves caught my eye.
I took part in a deer drive just outside of Attica, ny, in 1977. Anyone familiar with that area & that year knows it was one of the harshest, coldest, falls/winters on record. One hunter fired a shot, claiming to miss a deer. Only several weeks later did I find out that the hunter took a beautiful timber wolf, thinking it was a large coyote. It is believed that it crossed down from Canada over frozen Great lakes. That same winter, one was darted in Grand Island and released. I saw the wolf pelt mentioned above. It was tanned by the hunter, who also was a trapper. Checked around at first to get a full body mount, until he was told about the 10,000$ fine that would come with it. To this day, the pelt hangs on his basement wall. It's huge, beautiful. |
RE: COUGARS ARE HERE
On a bear hunt in Alberta a number of years ago, one of the hunters in camp shot a wolf. It was estimated at about 130 lbs., if I remember correctly. Long way from the 80 lbs. Sproul reports. Must have been a long, hard journey down here....
