MD Shotgun Season 07
OK who's getting syked?
Tell us what you do up to and the night before opening day of shotgun. I go over my buddies parents house. They live in Damascus which is like 5 min from where I hunt. I sleep over with my two hunting buddies and we stay up playing ping pong and BSing late cause we're too excited to sleep. Then we lay in the bunks talking about where we're going tomorrow morning and opening days of yesteryear. Memories... |
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
Well I'm getting charged. I love those first few hours of shooting because the entire time is a toss up. You might not see any deer, then you might see the entire herd.
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
I don't get to excited about gun seasoin anymore. I probably wouldn't even go this year except this is my wifes first year of hunting and I want her to whack something. I will be more nervous when a deer comes in than she probably will, I'm really hoping she can get one.

RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
I like the way you think, saxman. Just back from WV where I waxed an 8 pointer and a doe. I will miss the Maryland gun opener for the first time in YEARS to cheer for my local boys club football teams in the championships. We are......CROFTON!

RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
I'll be out Saturday. I haven't decided as to whether I am taking the bow or the black powder rifle. All will be decided Friday night. Guess a lot depends on how I do with the bow Thurs and Fri.
The only thing that has me concerned about the deer movement is the near full moon. I did see a doe at 415 last evening, so hopefully they will still be moving early Sat. We shall see. |

I don't hunt where the deer are. I try to hunt where I think they'll run to. :D |
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
For deer, I use archery tackle exclusively, so I'll be out there Saturday morning seeing if anything runs close enough to my stand for me to stop and shoot at!:D Once the gun seasons start, my hunting nearly shuts down until after they close and the deer start moving again. It's hard enough with a bow, but add guns to the mix and the movement becomes nearly non-existent soon after the season starts.

Rick,
That's where I will be. The Crofton 90's play the Chargers at 10:30, and the 125's play at 4. We're going to watch the first and tailgate between games, then head in for the second game. Your grandson's game is at 9:00, right? |
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
I'll be up near Damascus also Saxman. Maybe we will finally run into each other. Thinking about taking my muzzleloader. I am a better shot with my muzzy but i get more bullets with the 12ga. Still have not decided yet.

RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
DeerWhisperer,
You going to Browns Church Rd. to hunt? That's where I'll be. Patuxant River State Park. If I see anyone with a smokepole I'll ask them if they're DeerWhisperer. Probably get a wierd look since it probably won't be you. :D Who knows!!! Happy Thanksgiving to all. Can't wait to get out there on Saturday. |

RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
Saxman,
We hunt the same woods it's just that i go in on long corner road and walk about half way to browns church road side. Did you get anything? |
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
No deer here. I did shoot a deer. It ran a good ways as we tracked it all the way down into a bottom, across the river, and up the other side to where I found it attached to a drag. [&:]
I'm just glad someone got it. It was pretty messed up though. When I shot it, it was a 4 point and when I found it it was a 2 point and had a huge hole in its ear. I got jumpy and hit it a little low, it was dead but it would have had to bleed out. Someone got him early though. Oh well. I'll be back out there hopefully this week afterwork and next Saturday. You get anything? |
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
wow, thats about where i was. I have to cross the river and go to the top of the hill to get to browns church road. But i never seen a hunter at all till about 3.30 a guy and his kid walked by. I had the whole hill to myself.
I did manage to get a doe, about 110-120 pounds. saw 4 all day. |
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
When you going back out? DeerWhisperer and everyone else. :D I might do some looking for a stand sight down in the thick stuff to try to catch some there during the morning push.
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
Probably not back there till fri & Sat. Ft.meade maybe tomorrow afternoon, and wed afternoon. But it could change.
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
Every year I keep meaning to go sign up for Fort Meade but keep putting it off. Oh well.
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
i used to hunt ft. meade but stopped last year..... found other places to hunt for free that produce:) does anyone happen to know if they are gonna open they turkey hunting back up or not? that place is littered with them and a 15/20 min drive is alot better then a 2-3.5 hour drive to dorchester or western MD
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
MNHA , NWTF central md chapter and the Refuge are in talk's right now to start up another trukey hunt for the 09 season . We are pushing for 3 days a week 1 day for youth 1 for handicaped and 1 for general public

RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
Admittedly, I haven't hunted there too much in recent years, but I haven't seen or heard a turkey there in quite a few years. When they did (do) have turkey hunts, is it lottery, or can anyone with a permit check in and go after them?
Thanks! |
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
Wow Doug, This is only my 3rd year hunting there And i have seen them every year. Not as much this year though, but i have not been hunting there as much as the past 2 years.
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
Going out this Saturday?
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
It will be a lottery hunt . Maybe with some standby's
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
Yep, me and the boy are going this saturday.
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
I took a decent 7 point yesterday. I used my bow though - does that count? :D
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
SURE DOES , FALLS UNDER FIREARMS TAG DONT IT? I THINK IT DOES.
ANYWAYS NICE GOING, POST A PIC IF YA GOT ONE. IM GOING OUT IN THE MORNING TO TRY TO POP ONE IN A HEAVY HUNTED AREA HOPE THAT THE PUSH WILL WORK IM GOING TO SET UP ON THE EDGE OF THE THICKES STUFF I FOUND THIS YEAR AND HOPE THEY RUN FOR IT DR KILL |
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
WOW , IS IT STILL GUN SEASON??
I ONLY HERD ONE SHOT, I DID NOT SEE A DEER , I SAW ONE BEAVER,TURKEY, DR KILL |
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
Yeah same here. I saw squat. Heard 2 or 3 shots all day and non were close. For some reason no one showed up for the hunt today. I think if we had more hunters out and about we would have seen more deer.
I think I'm done until muzzleloader. Give the deer some time. |
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
I saw 40 - 50 deer including some very nice bucks. Unfortunately, they were all onproperty where I do not have permission to hunt. We sat in the cold all morning and did not see anything on the farm we hunt.
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
My buddy got a 17 1/2 or so inch inside spread 9 pointer in PG county yesterday at 7:45 AM. It was one of three bucks following a hot doe.
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
Wow it sounds like the rut is still rolling. Is it just me or is it really late this year? I've been weary of putting out esterus scents cause I'm afraid I'd hit the end of the rut with them and just scare everything away.
I think the next time I'm going to get out is muzzleloader (2 weeks). What scents do you think will work good then? Vanilla curiosity? |
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
I would think the second rut might be going on to some extent, if only because doe fawns may just now come into cycle for the first time. I can't imagine SOME estrus scent spooking bucks.
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
OK well I have been turned on to the Buck Bomb this year and have 1.5 estrus bombs left. I was wondering if setting one of them off would spook the deer away. I played it a little too early this year and had a doe come to investigate, then spook. I'd like the same reaction because if I have a gun in my hand then they won't spook at 25 yards, they'll just drop at 40 on the way in.:D
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
Thanks Chris, thats a pretty good thing to hear...... and Doug, there seems to be larger flocks in different sections... i already know which two i want to hunt...But there are a few sections i hadn't seen or heard one in
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
Area's d,e,f and i seem to hold the most turkey
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
when i last hunted there 2 seasons ago (not including this one) there was another that held the most that i saw most frequently
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
I remember having a whole flock around me in Q, but it's been YEARS since that happened. I mostly hunt I, and have seen them only a few times there.
BTW, how have they done there so far this shotgun season? I still haven't been but for bow a few times, and hope to go on Thursday morning. |
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
I don't think they have killed more then 50 deer . I know they only took 36 deer opening day
|
RE: MD Shotgun Season 07
I spent the afternoon on Thursday the whole day on Friday and the afternoon on Sat at MNHA. I walked into the woods on Friday morning at about 6:30 to get setup. It was thick and dark. I am moving slowly along when I hear a rustle and see 3 to 4 white tails pop up and take off. I am guessing I stumbled (I tried my best) across them bedded down. I did not have a shot and would not take a shot wildly into the thick stuff. It was really dissapointing. Its a good spot I found and i wonder if I should hunt there again.
I have only been hunting two years and this was my first year at MNHA. I really liked it and tried two different sections. Saw a really big fox, thats a first for me. I keep hearing that the moon is screwing up the season as its so light at night and they are feeding then and bedding down during the day. There didnt seem to be alot of people there overall and when I left Saturday evening they had only had two deer checked in that day. Due to class I will not be able to get out next weekend so I hope I can get out on the 3rd and 4th and get my first deer. If anyone has one on a leash and can tie it to a tree let me know. JK |
