if SPROUL says he saw one,you can bet they exist.
you have to spend time on road ,most of sighting i have heard locally were mostly guys going to work.
2 saw cougar walk near their treestands..
prime times are usually just at daylight, reason i feel is they are heading to cover to take nap and were hunting all night..
lately here in my area of wmu2g, sighting have gone quiet..
2 reasons, many are not driving as much do to gas prices.
i feel these cats dont stay in one area to long..
i also feel they head to warmer areas of state in winter where food is easier to get..

I am not going to get caught up in this a again but, I would like to know what is the best call for them?
I saw whatI thought was the male to a female that had 2 cubs with her last year.I saw this onelast week running across a tar road coming back from archery hunting. It was in broad daylight about 30 yards ahead of me. The strangest part is the tail appeared to be quite a bit darker than the rest of the cat. Now ifI can call it out to a camera and get a photo?? The distance from the female seen last year and this one is roughly 45 miles...

No Sir.....YOU are wrong.
The State says they are not here, and there is a reason for that.
Just imagine the repercussions if the Environmentalist Wacko's and the Animal Rights Activists forced any Eastern State to admitt a breeding population Cougars existed here........
The litigation in State and Federal court would be devastating to local economies and the enjoyment of the Outdoors we all enjoy.
Are you old enough to remember the Spotted Owl fiasco in the Pacific NW?
Or the reason Wet Lands are designated Wet Lands?
If the State were forced to recognize a breeding population then we would then have to live in Cougar Habitat.....that's a big difference from what we live in now.
I was imagining things when I saw one 75 yards from my back door a few years ago while I was mowing my shooting range.
I was hearing things everytime I've heard one screaming on the ridge above the house since then.
I was halucinating everytime I've found tracks.
The Arabian Horse recently attacked by an "unknown wild animal" here locally was just determined to be by another horse....according to the NYS authorities.
I can live quite fine with that.......
Let it be, no cats exist here..............................

Sproulman,
I hope you understand exactly what Wilds is saying because he is right on the mark with this one. Just take a look up this way with what is going on with the Maine trappers because of a chance that a lynx, bald eagle, or a wolve might get caught in a trappers trap. Maine is in court still battleing it out with all those wacko groups that are against trapping, hunting, and fishing anyways. Also when you here that wolves are up here, they do not exist unless put here illegally. The state will not put them here as coyotes have been breeding with them so they couldn't exist even if they were put here. As they would be bred out in a relatively short time frame. So as much as we do not like the eastern coyote they have stopped any wolve re-introductions here.
Now if they have any mountain lions here, as Wilds said, it would be nothing but bad news for all of us. So sometimes you just have to let the lionrest sort of to say and just walk by. I still may want to take a picture of one but, not for the purpose of saying here is proof, but rather just to have it. They do appear to look quite different than the western cousins but they still do not exist...

Me personally I think these sightings are Lynx but I am not going to say Cougars definitly aren't around b/c I don't know that, a conservationist with a 4 yr degree doesn't makethem 100% either.
The reason I think there Lynx is b/c we know there around here. This is from the DEC Site
"Between 1989 and 1992, the New York State College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University (CESF) conducted an experimental program of lynx releases in Northern New York. Over 80 lynx were caught in northwestern Canada and released in the Adirondacks. All of the lynx were radiocollared at the time of release, and the radios provided information of survival and dispersal of these animals."
"Some of the released lynx dispersed farther than anyone expected. Lynx from the CESF release showed up in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, and other parts of New York. One lynx was found a straight line distance of 485 miles from the release site, 8 months later and 2 pounds heavier than at the time of release."
ALSO
"In many instances it is a case of mistaken identity. Other cats, fishers or dogs are the animals probably seen. Once in a great while a real cougar is sighted. Based on our experiences, it is safe to assume that these animals have been intentionally or unintentionally released by people."

i believe it.
most people dont disagree cats were released,we do disagree with PGC that they are PETS .
this will continue until the PGC does not say they DONT EXIST..
this could all stop if PGC would not say that you did not see LYNX, COUGAR, LION ,maybe all same..
now, as said, telling truth will hurt our hunting, well, its hurt already..
look at lying on the deer situation here in pa.
PGC says, lots of deer, hunters find few.dcnr says deer all over, too many ,they need killed off.
folks, it will not be COUGAR sighting that hurt our future hunting,it will be HUNTERS themselves that are killing off what game is left..
now you know what happened to indians, they tried to stop it and see where it got them..
MAJOR CUSTER is alive and well at the PGC..

We've a serious supply of deer here, so I'll not fret PA's mis-managment problem onto NY.....much difference.
Keep beatin' the drum for Cougar Existance if ya like, but remember you got led to water more than once, reckon you wasn't thirsty.
Heard a rumor thatthe black helicopters are on the move tonight, you'dbest grab that foil hat, quick like..............
There's no Cats.....let it be.
