RE: PA hunters no reports

No I dont belong to that organizatio either. Not sure if I agree on all of their points.
Anyway I was out today on public land for the last day of flintlock.
Covered about 1 mile of wooded area in deep snow (you know the kind when you take a few steps and every so often you sink to your hip?) and 14 degree weather with strong winds. Needless to say the conditions were brutal!!! I saw no deer and only one set of fresh tracks. I am hoping that because of the deep snow most of the deer had yarded in an area I dont know about but other hunters I spoke to at the end of my hunt also claimed seeing no deer. I dont know what to think.

I was pleased tp learn that the PGC is going to use WMU's instead of couties for doe tags. Lets hope they can monitor these larger areas better than a small county (hardly seems possible does it?)

Check out the proposals for 03-04 at:

Geez, where do I start?

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote<font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> &quot;I would bet that while a buck is breeding a doe, other does will also be in heat & guess what happens? A smaller buck slides in & nails her.&quot;

Lets think about this For a minute....IF the buck doe ration is more in line, this very situation happens less often. I think Gary Alt said something like that, didnt he?

[quote] &quot;I work with a guy who applies for every doe tag possible,he usually shoots 3-4 deer a year, no one can eat that much meat&quot;

Gee, I'm sorry that some of us don't conform to the standard that you think we should. My Family doesn't use much beef. We use 7-8 deer a year. (all legally taken in SRA's, multiple states etc) Who are you to dictate how much a family should use?

[quote] &quot;Alt has hunters believing that with AR in place you'll get a chance at the biggest buck in your life.WRONG!!!&quot;

Not what he said! What he said was that nature intended For bucks to mature a bit before they breed and that there be competition among breeding age bucks for the available does. It's called natural selection and is what ensures that a species is perpetuated by the strongest, best specimens.

[quote] &quot;Some guys will indeed shoot bigger bucks&quot;

Yes, he did say that! But in the context of it being a welcome by-product of properly managing the herd to be in balance with the habitat, other wildlife and balanced properly with regard to the buck/doe ratio.

[quote] &quot;BTBowhunter

Read the posts by PA hunters on the site I mentioned 5 posts above this one. Im sure you'll find many Alt bashers.&quot;

So? If you sign on to NAMBLA's website you'll find lots of people who think pedophilia is OK. Doesn't make em right or a majority.

Oh well i see alot of you want to follow Alt & thats cool. I'm in the process of purchasing a neighboring farm & I'll kind of do what I've been doing all of my hunting life. That is leaving the does alone.I'll have 540 acres to hunt on & manage as I wish & you know what I get a nice buck every year. Why? I have the best &quot;bait&quot; in the world,live does. Also I didn't dictate how much meat anyone could eat,it was an opinion & you know what they say about opinions. I think it's a shame that the PGC lured hunters into thinking big bucks would be the by product of AR. It was designed to confuse hunters about thier real goal,herd reduction. Just an opinion & it's mine & I'm sticking to it.The people who are happiest abouit AR are probably the ones shooting most of the spikes & can't seem to hang thier tag on a decent buck.Again just an opinion.

If you stick with it and learn all you can about whitetails, you will probably also support AR someday. I believe that most people that support AR are people that want to do right for the animal of their passions. I believe that if it was decided that we should harvest no bucks or maybe only little bucks, most of these guys would still be supportive of the biologists.

Congatulations on your bow kill. Sounds like a dandy 8 pointer. I'm assuming you got him in the Fall and not in the late season, correct? Wish I could tell you how to post a pic but I dont know either, I'm sure others besides myself would love to see him.

I spent some time reading the site you recomended and found it very educational, however, I feel PA's management plan would work best on private land where you can control all hunters. I still maintain that on public land the large doe kills will devastate the herd.
As turd stated earlier its just my opinion.

Turd,
I agree with the does being excellent bait.
I stated earlier that on a trip tp anticosti our gang of 12 hunters all took home 24 nice bucks. Everyone could have shot doe but no one was forced to nor did anyone have to. My point is that most every hunter that goes gets 2 buck and the does are seldom shot.
The gang I went with has been going to the same place for 24 years and out of the 500 or so deer taken by them over these 24 years I'd bet they have taken less than 15 does.
Does anyone know why the ratios aren't out of whack up there?

Sincerely,
Mr.D

As far as Anticosti Island goes....guaranteed someone is shooting does!

TWIG69, if you want to send me a picture, I will post for you.

I certainly agree with Mr.D about one thing. It will be tough to get AR to work on public land in PA, due to the sheer number of hunters.
I think it can be done, but not without a lot of cooperation from the majority of hunters.

Now I`m jumping back a few posts to a comment Turd made...

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote<font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> I think it's a shame that the PGC lured hunters into thinking big bucks would be the by product of AR. It was made very clear from the start by Gary Alt that reducing the size of the herd was the goal.

I agree with that.

In the mountainous counties the herd is lower than it was 20-25 years ago. I firmly believe this is due to timbering cycles.

The herd in southwest PA is way too big. It truly needs to be reduced by half!

I agree that more and smaller management areas are needed, and I think they will come in time.
