he called the dec and theysaid they dont exist, he said he got a pic of it and they said it was a bob cat, but than they came to his house and looked at it and confirmed it was a mountain lion. |
RE: mountain lions in ny
Soap, if we knew what REALYY walked around in the woods we probably would climb a bit higher!!!! LOL Can you post the pics?
|
RE: mountain lions in ny

|
RE: mountain lions in ny
hes lives about 3 hours away from me, ill get them next time i vist him, the funny thing is the dec people denied they existed.

RE: mountain lions in ny

RE: mountain lions in ny
yea there have been many sitings in the past. doesnt surprise me at all that he got a pic of one. be cool to see when you get it

RE: I have a Pic
BARofsoap is correct. I have a neighbor that was awakened by his goats being attacked by a black bear 2 years ago. He shot the bear and wounded it. They called the DEC and the next day they set out to find the bear. While tracking the bear through snow they came across Mtn. Lion tracks. This is in the beginning of the catskills. They reintroduced them to control the coyote population but it is not working. They need to release more mtn lions to reduce the dang coyotes
|
RE: I have a Pic
I don't know about mountain lions, but I know we have bob cats, I saw one this past week!
|
RE: I have a Pic
I also live in NY, and have seen mountain lions. At my cousin's house in the capital district they had a problem with one eating horses last year. It took down a few horse from behind and pounced on their hind quarters. when DEC was notified they said that it must have been coyotes but coyotes dont pounce onto horses like that....
|
RE: I have a Pic
ORIGINAL: salty They reintroduced them to control the coyote population but it is not working. They need to release more mtn lions to reduce the dang coyotes there is no FACT that they are here, in fact there has been exactly 0 amount of evidence collected to date. most people cant even tell a bobcat from a mountain lion. post a "what kind of animal pic" on here, and if its a bobcat then better than 80% of the people will say it's DEFINETLY a cougar...aside from a lost pet, i'm not buying it. -moose |
RE: I have a Pic
umm he has a pic of it and dec confirmed it, unless its a bob cat with a mutantly large tail and a lions face, and the dec people dont know what there talking about...
the guy put a 15 lb bag of cat food out and sat infront of a door with a camera and he says its as clear as day... his friend saw one as well, hes was doing a turkey call and it was stalking towards him. please dont give false accusations saying theres 0 evidence because theres more than enough. |
RE: I have a Pic
We have had some here in Missouri. My buddy's friend got one on his game cam. And how could you not tell the difference between a bobcat and a mountain lion. They aren't even close to the same size. I dont by it.
|
RE: I have a Pic
Who cares if there is. I don't. There are all kinds of critters out there in the woods. There's not supposed to be elk in IL but a guy killed one last year. You kill it and post it and I will believe it.
|
pic
Its definitley possible. There was a mt. lion spotted here in omaha,ne not to long ago. Not to mention the growing number of spottings in the middle of the nebraska.
|
RE: pic
I hope you are right - but......You'll need to post the picture, and a letter from DEC confirming it as a wild mountain lion - in NY for many of us hereto believe it.
sorry - I tend not to be believe it - but I'll look at evidence. Nothing against you personally - I hope you don't take it that way. FH |
RE: pic
i'm not accusing anyone of anything but thier eyes playing tricks on them. this topic has been hashed for years, and no evidence has been presented. no droppings, no hair, no tracks, no dna....nada.
and to think that ENCON would release a top of the food chain predator into NY? no way, not buyin that one. just like the insurance agencies released coyotes here to controll deer poulations........ and encon released rattlesnakes to controll the turkeys...... whats next, grizzly bears to controll the coyotes and mountain lions? i think one or two could wander through, but in all likelyhood they are lost/released pets. i'm not saying a cougar could'nt be here, i just think the statement that NY released them is out of hand thanks moose |

Oh God not again.......

Why would you post I have a pic, with no pic? C'mon lets see it or this will be thirty pages of opinions again..

RE: I have a Pic
Huntingal89 is pretty feared also.[8D] I said I saw one in NY when I was a kid but everyone told me I was crazy. That was 50 years ago.

RE: I have a Pic
Barofsoap, where in NY was the sighting of the cougar? I'm here to tell you, I believe through experience he may have seen one.
|
RE: pic
Oh I see you guys in NY have this sort of conspiracy theory going around too, just like us in PA. I've heard lost of stories starting "I know this guy who saw a Mt. Lion" But I have yet to see any proof besides the occasional ver bad cast of a track. Do I think their could be some in PA and NY? Yes I do but I don't think there are near as many as people think there are and I really don't believe the stories that the states are shipping them in and releasing them.

RE: I have a Pic
i dont care if you guys belive me or not, ive seen one with my own 2 eyes, im going hunting in the area where they have been spotted on thanks giving weekend, and im going to try and shoot one

RE: pic
OK, I didn't want to do this,BUT!!! I live on the border between VT and NY and just the other night when I was leaving my ground blind, guess what I saw??? Am I 100% sure? I don't know what else it could be.
It was light enough to see quite clearly. As I stepped less than 5 yards from my blind I caught movement in a clear cut not 35 yards ahead of me. What caught my attention was the way this animal moved. It didn't jump, it didn't run, it loped. This animal was within 30 yards. It hunkered down and quickly realized I was something out of the ordinary and took a quick bound into the woods and was gone. Now look, I'm not some idiot that doesn't know the difference between a bob cat and a mountain lion. I have seen plenty of bob cats. Last year a well seasoned friend and hunter saw a mtn.lion during the day. Not far from here last year a farmer lost a few calves that were left with large gashes which he flatly states were not caused by coyotes. His hired hand said he saw a mtn.lion. When they called the powers to be and explained the sightening, the remarks are always the same. " They don't live around here", or " Do you have any concrete proof?" Do I have pictures of this animal? No!!!. But, I know what I saw. |
RE: mountain lions in ny
abarof...no pics???..any hoo...DEC never denied the existence..pumas,cougars, panthers, mt. lions..( all the same animal called by these various names) have been inNY forever..The originalindigenous peoplesof NY called them "cauter" or 'katter"., which roughly is translated to cat.. The solitary nature of this animal and its habitatlends to its seemingly invisibility...after all whogoes up 4 - 8000ft up mountains daily to actually seeone???? Except hunters without cameras or residents without cameras..like Abarsoap's kin.....

there really nothing to argue, many have been sited in ny, its not a myth its a fact. It will remain a myth and coffee shop rumor until claimed sitings are verified. please dont give false accusations saying theres 0 evidence because theres more than enough. RE: mountain lions in ny
the dec people saw the pic and agreed it was a mountain lion, i would think they know what there talking about... and i dont have the pic with me and i dont feel like driving 5 hours to get it.
|
RE: mountain lions in ny
So people are really responding to this and asking for proof. Anyone can get a picture of a mountain lion and post it here.
I believe the proof is in the eyes of the beholder. I saw one in Pa just this summer. It was in a cage at T&Ds Cats of the world in Penns Creek. They are a beautiful animal. |
RE: mountain lions in ny
the dec people saw the pic and agreed it was a mountain lion, i would think they know what there talking about... Lots of ways to get a photo other then a 5 hour drive. Steve |
RE: mountain lions in ny
abarofsoap -
When I first said we would want proof...........I knew this was coming. Don't take it personal - Just show us - we want to believe it too........... but need some real proof - and seriously if the DEC has confirmed it - seems like they would want to issue a press release too.? FH |
RE: mountain lions in ny
ive seen them twice in my life in PA and a lady i did a job for took a pic of her dogs cornering one in her driveway but the game commission said "we dont have them" and told her her picture was a fake. if i remeber correctly PA game commission was claiming there were no coyotes here not too long ago and there is no doubt theres a ton here. a guy locally about three years ago kept telling the guys at a bait shop about one onhis property and the one day a game commissioner was there and said they dont live here. a few days later he shot it and took pics of it and brought them in and left them there. they claimed he went to another state and shotit and cam back. all this withing a few days.i dont think theres many but i sure dont care to run into one when climbing a tree. there was a show on discovery about a year ago that tracked MTlions they had a few that crossed two states and alot that crossed at least one. its foolish to think they couldnt gradualy get here there plenty of food for them so why doubt it so much.

RE: mountain lions in ny
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah... I'll believe it as soon as some REPUTABLE source confirms it. Until then as far as I'm concernedall this is just more blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah and BS. Somebody wake me when this thread dies like all the other ml threads die. After pages of drivel and unsubstantiated claims. What a waste of bandwidth!

RE: mountain lions in ny
This is in the beginning of the catskills. They reintroduced them to control the coyote population but it is not working. you cant come here and say "someone took a picture, and they said it was real" and expect people to believe you without showing the picture. have you not seen the debates about this? repeating that the DEC confirmed it over and over does nothing to prove it to people here. post the picture, or it didnt happen |
RE: mountain lions in ny
i think its just a matter of people just dont want to face it because the most of them are probably scared of the mtn lion i live in new york and i believe we have mtn lions and also i have a friend that lives on taborton mountain and has seen wolves that dec claims dont exist either but they are the ones who put them there
