Bowhunters who are cooperators in the sighting log keep a diary of their bowhunting activities and the number of animals of several species that they see from their stand. These logs are summarized and a sighting index, which consists of the number of sightings per 1,000 hours, is calculated for each species by Wildlife Management Unit (WMU). The results from 2002 are available in both a Statewide Report and detailed tables for selected species by Wildlife Management Unit.
The detailed tables, accessible from the link box above, include the following information for each WMU:
[ul][*]The number of hunters participating in the log[*]The number of individual animals they saw while on stand[*]The sighting index for that species, or sex and age group, consisting of the number of sightings per 1,000 hours[*]The upper and lower 80% confidence limits on that sighting index [/ul]

On one hand it shows the areas to hunt.On the other hand it's a waste of time to hunt deer in 99% of this area. This shows that hunters need to find other spots but if they do it's gonna get crowded.

I thinkthe mapwould only be helpful if you were going to hunt in the same time period as the survey. It'd be interesting to see a monthly survey of the same area over a year. I'd especially love to see the results a day or two before rifle season and then some time in the second week of rifle. I think it would tell us a lot!

Thanks Todd.

Germain, the areas with the least amount of deer are standing in areas with absolutely no understory except some mountain laurel.Just drive on RT 322 from the top of the mountain past Mitch's restarant. You can see forever through those woods.I imagine alot of deer did get killed in that area during the beginning of the herd reduction efforts. There's very few places for the deer to hide until they get way back in and hit all the mountain laurel.

Thank-you T.

I agree Doug. There's no cover and the woods are wide open in those areas.
