I don't think I'm buying the 1200lb bear but Pa does have some of the biggest black bear in the world. People who don't live here just laugh and say that we guess at the weights and exagerate but that's pretty tough to do when you have a check station. I know the last one I took weighed 356 gutted and 415 live, scored 20 11/16 but was only 3 1/2 years old. He still had a lot of growing to do and could have easily been an 800 lb boar in a few years. I think the guides from new brunswick are just jealous that they can't get their bear to grow as big as we can down here.

From The PGC website:
The top 12 bears taken in bear season to date all had estimated live weights exceeding 600 pounds. The largest bear was a 747-pound male harvested by Rory L. Haine of Woodward, in Grugan Township, Clinton County, at 10 a.m. on the Nov. 22.

I think the guy who shot the 1200# bear is the same one who drives the coyote stocking semi-truck for the insurance companies.

Ok, so here is what Ive learned from this thread...........Mitch Rompola drives around PA in a tractor trailer, letting loose Coyotes, and Mountain Lions, for State Farm ins co. Upon going through the tunnels on the turnpike he stops to let some coyotes out and shoots a 1200# black bear. Guides from the NE states and Canada call him a liar but nothing can be proven because he is on his way back to the Midwest with his Bear to pick up some more Coyotes. Am I close or waaaaaaaaay off??

In captivity black bears have been known to get over 1200lbs. The biggest hog=pig weighed over 2000lbs. If they got the food source and protection like in a swampy bog,I am sure one could get over 1200lbs in the wild. That hog that was shot in georgia 800lbs.I never thought wild pigs got bigger than bears. That's all a bear is,I big furry pig to me.

But I have seen many big bears after drinking many beers. The beer seems to make the bears bigger and the bigger the bear the more beer I drank to make that bear bigger from all the beer I drank to see them big bears I must say I had my beer goggles on to see them big bears.

Many years ago I attended a seminar by Gary Ault at the Middle Creek environmental center and he stated that a bear estimated to be over 1,000 lbs. was tagged with a radio collar in the Promised Land State Park. The bear dens under a summer cottage and the owners of the land had no idea it was there. It’s no surprise to hear about one this size. There are definitely some big ones in the heavy laurel and swamps of Pike and Monroe counties. The Pa. records are scored by skull measurements not gross weight. The record at this time was set in 1998 at 22.13. This bear actually weighed less than the previous record of 22.4 set by a friend, Chad Reed in 1991.

Don't know were you're getting the info you have Mike, but there have been quite few bear harvested in Pa. over 800 lbs. One in particular was 901 lbs.

That'swhere I got the info from, but it is, as of the Tuesday of bear season. Don't know what was reported on Wednesday, but no 1200 lb. bear had been reported.

Mossyoak33 has the correct story.
