Sorry I didn't reply to this earlier Vike. Oaks are definitly a preferred food source. White oaks especially, the nut isn't as bitter as Red Oak. Other tree's off top my head obviously apples, Beech are another nut tree, but often beechnuts are on the ground, and gone by 10/15 in NY. Bitternut Hickory is another nut tree I've seen deer around pretty heavy. Hawthornes, those darn spiny branched tree's, deer eat the small berry like fruit they produce. I watched deer munch on freshly fallin maple leafs this time yr. Black Cherry tree's are very common ,and often overlooked. They produce a small dark berry dropped this time year deer will feed on. The best time I find to hunt any of these sources, is when they are not widely producing that fall. example acorns seem pretty scarce this year. If you can find a lone oak dropping nuts, its a serious magnet! I'd recommend buying a field guide to tree's to help identify some in areas you hunt. They are a cheap book, like $10 find in most book stores. As far as Persimmons, I've yet to see one in NY. They are more a southern US tree to my knowledge.

Thanks BuckAlley,I've got a field guide on tree's but it's a general guide meaning it covers all of the U.S.A.I would like to get a guide for the northeast.Abook that shows bark color and texture. It would be nice if it told which animals use the tree also.

What factors affect the White Oaks production of acorns?
Is there anything prior to Fall (besides pray) that can be done to increase the odds?
