New York Junior Archery
#11
This state is so far behind the modern times in hunting. This state is one of the few left with higher age limits for children. I have 2 boys, that picked up their first bows at the age of 3. I started them on those little plastic jobbers w/suction cupped arrows. My oldest is now 14, and this will be his first yr of Junior Archery. Unfortunately he's also heavily involved in school sports now-football. His team has been practicing 6 days a wk., and it'll be difficult for him to get out as much as him & I hoped. This is one of the problems NYS heads are failing to recognize, and just another reason why this state's average hunter age is 49yrs of age!! Why is it children can hunt with a gun at age 12 for small game & turkey. But they cannot hunt with a bow until age 14. Do you know how difficult is was as a father tobe watch hunting programs on the Outdoor Ch. with my son. Seeing 8yr olds shooting deer with a rifle or bow, and have them look upon me with confusion, and disappointment, asking why is it like that there, but not in NYS? I see absolutely NO reason why this states age limits cannot be lowered if accompanied by an adult. Its only a win win situation for the future of hunting, andparent- children relationships. This present bill is one I've taken action on over the past several yrs. But it always gets hung out to dry. Its time it was passed if the state plans to have future hunters!!!!!!
