Wisc. hunters being forced to put name on treestands
#1
Some how the proposal to force us to put our names and address on our treestands in 1 inch square letters got passed. Who in the **&@!$#%@ would of possibly voted for such a stupid law???? I would like to think hunters are smarter than that? It must of been the cat lovers and anti-hunters that we encouraged to come to our meetings by proposeing cats as a small game animal? Consider the facts guys (and gals)
Ok, I permanently put my name on my treestand IN ONE INCH SQUARE LETTERING, as told by law. Now, I am the only one who can use that stand, no one but the named person, can be in the named stand. Or handle it. So every person in my hunting party has to have there own climber, & there own portable.
Lone Wolf climber = $300. portable $180. Ok so now I have to spend $480 bucks on each of my three kids so they can hunt public land??? What if a relitive or freind comes to viset and hunt from out of state? He has to mark up his stands? He can't use mine? What a bunch of CRAP! What about guides and outfitters who use these lands? Each cliant has to bring his own stand and mark it up before hunting? So, the reason we need this law, we are told, is so that law breakers who leave there stands in the woods over night can be cuaght by reading there name and address off of the stand. IF THEY ARE LAW BREAKERS... YOU THINK THEY WILL FOLLOW THIS LAW????????????? Ok, now PLEASE, show me where I can fit the following on my lone wolf stands in 1 inch square letters as prescribed by our SO CALLED freinds the WDNR:

Without a doubt, that is one of the stupidest things I ever heard! About all you can do now is gather up all your friends, both hunting and non-hunting, and start sending letters, e-mails, phone calls, etc. Don't give them a minutes peace; I especially like phone calls because it takes time out of their day and fills up the voicemail box. Maybe you can get it changed back.
Hate to see that happen, because it gives other states ideas, too. I'll contact my brother in Wisconsin Rapids and have him contact his friends. BTW, his son is coming deer hunting with me this fall (first time hunting) in MN and is trying to borrow a stand, so I guess we'll see a name and address on it.
Good luck!

The proposed law doesn't allow for a removeable /switchable nameplate ?
I would think that such a nameplate would satisfy the legal requirement and also allow legal multiple use of the stand , just change the nameplate for a different user each day . Indiana has mandated having the hunter's name and address on non-portable stands erected on public land for years , it's really not a big deal .

Read below, the question from the meeting. Where did you get the information as to the letter size and the fact that you are the only one that can hunt that stand. First, you can use your DNR # which will take no space at all and size did not seem to matter. Second, all they want is a way to contact the owner of the stand so they won't have to wait in the woods for the owner to return to give him his ticket. Third, anyone from your party can use the stand as long as it has the owners info on it. This is how the warden explained it to our group. I think its a good thing. I also have the vote total. 6,237 for and 3,174 against. Also,I don't think there were 6,000+ cat lover at the meetings.
33. Do you support requiring portable tree stands that are placed on state land or land that is under the management of the department to be identified with the owners name and address or their DNR customer identification number? 6,237

I believe this is correct.

When it was brought up at my meeting they said it would 1 inch letters that could be read from the ground by the warden. Someone asked if the stand would be able to be used by another person. The Warden said NO.
I like the idea someone had about useing nameplates. However, People will still be finding stands in the woods without name and address. I would NEVER put my DNR number on anything an anti could get ahold of. Only us law biding hunters are being punished.[:'(]

The change would require people erecting portable tree stands on public land to label them -- in one-inch square or larger lettering -- with the owner's name, address or DNR customer identification number.

It is illeagal to leave your stand in the woods overnight in Wisconsin. That law is not proposed to change. This law is to stop the law breakers who leave there stands in the woods over night unatendid from breaking the law... Make sense? Its like making bullets illeagle to possess in stores becuase robbers are useing loaded guns. The law breakers are still going to break the law. And there is already a law on the books to address the problem. It is only going to hurt guys like me who follow the rules. I guide several groups of nonresidents on the public lands in Wisc. They hunt for 2 to 5 days... They need to have a name tag made? STUPID LAW! I have relitives who hunt when they come up to viset, they need there nams on there climbing stands that you bring down with you when you come out of it after the hunt? STUPID LAW! 1INCH Square letters and numbers? My stand has 3/4 high rungs. STUPID LAW!
